differences between AU2 & AU3 XR6???

Can somebody tell me what the main differences are between the AU2 & AU3 XR6's?

What improvements were most evident and if the price difference between the 2 is worth it?

Hi Mate,

There were some changes between the AUII and AUIII XR's. Main difference is cosmetic's like dot print windscreen, clear indicators and the introduction of the Rebel bodykit option. On the XR6 HP the series III gained a bigger oval exhaust tip like the VCT's.

Keep in mind that the late running AUII's (built: 6/2001 onwards) had alot of the AUIII changes like coloured body mirrors, new thicker window seals. LSD became an option on the XR6 HP, but gained side rockers (small side skirt) standard.

You really don't miss anything in the AUII compared to the AUIII.

Thanks Gary, I thought it was mainly cosmetic. Was there any change in suspension or driveline aspects? In other words, did the AU2 not have irs and the AU3 did?

Or Was it mainly external improvements rather than mechanical?

Reason Im asking is if its worth getting an AU3 over an AU2. But with the added price of the AU3 Im not sure if there is any advantage in going that way!

Which do you think is better: AU2 xr6 vct with conventional 17's or AU2 fairmont ghia with factory bodykit and 17's?

Im debating with myself which of the 2 would have the advantage in as far as performance and handling are concerned. I know they both have the VCT motor, the ghia doesnt have lsd, and the xr6 has a better exhaust from stock, that and also the xr6 vct seems to be holding its value better, but still, which one is better in features, performance, and handling?

Go the Ghia - performance upgrades are easy enough, stuff like brakes, exhaust etc - but the Ghia's main advantage over the XR is that it's interior is some serious drool factor. Personally I think the XR's interior isnt much better than a Forte, if at all.

But as far as features go, the XR6 vct still has cruise, power windows, trip computer, and DTE. Other than the visual aspects, what does the fairmont have extra in the way of practical interior features?

Ghias have leather and electric seats, not sure if all of them are but Im positive the drivers one is.

6 Disc in Dash CD and a pretty good sound system also standard.

Climate Control, Traction Control, Adjustable Heigh Aerial all standard.

I have read somewhere that for some reason the Fairmonts have bigger boot space than other models, I dont see how that could be possible though as they all share the same shell.

Fairmonts have a higher dash that has door open indicator etc etc.

Id go the XR6, it will hold it value better! Plus the VCT has heaps of luxurys; cruise control, eletronic windows & mirrors etc. The VCT was sort of the luxury model of the XR6's. Plus you have the wicked look of the XR6 with the mean front, the XR 'shave a great presence on the road and turn alot of heads!. Id take the XR anyday, but thats your choice! :)

As for perforance, the VCT XR6 has handles incredibly well and id say it would be faster than the fairmont, has the sports exhaust and probely geared differently, not 100% sure though.

I've got an XR6 VCT (series 1 though), and if i had the choice, I'd go the Ghia any day. You get exactly the same running gear - engine, auto with adaptive shift, IRS with LSD (don't know who told you the ghia doesn't have LSD) and sports suspension, PLUS you get all the ghia luxury features. Only problem is whether you prefer the XR front over the ghia front. Even then, there's nothing stopping you throwing an extra $2 or $3k at the ghia with an after market XR front.

I would definitely go a series 2/3 ghia (even a series 1), and get the TS50 front bar for it.
