I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-S85.
It's a 4.1 megapixel and everything can be manually adjusted if required. One great thing about it is it has a lens thread so I can attach lenses and filters.
I bought it Japan 2 years ago for the equivalent of just over $1300. When it was finally released here it sold for $1800.
I have to say though, the digicam is the best gadget I've ever bought.
Whatever you end up getting, if you're going to use it a lot then I suggest you buy a second big memory card (they normally come with a small one - buy 1 or 2 * 128 MB or bigger ones) and battery for it. That way you won't get stooged when you're out and about and run out of juice or space for more photos.
Here's a few great websites that review digicams and offer advice, tech tips and other stuff:

If you want to buy filters at some stage, the Hoya ones are said to be quite good. I just bought several from:

Took a week for my package to arrive.
