My buddy has a Sony Mini-DV (dunno actual model #) and I connected it to my lappy using a Firewire cable, fired up Microsoft Movie Maker (I have Win XP) and off I went. Just over 8 mins of footage takes up 70 MB in High Quality PAL (720 x 576) WMV format.
Didn't have to do anything at all to get the camera working with the PC. Is your PC up to date with all the service packs and updates? That might help...

Are you talking about a still camera or video camera?
There is a bug on the Windows XP client that causes all sorts of problems downloading video. Still digital works a treat if you have the correct drivers.
You can get other software that works well and has a free trial period. I can't remember what it is at the moment.
hey if you wanna sell your old one paul give me a hoy...

I bought a Panasonic Digital Video camera, with all the goodies including a firewire card and digital video software kit.
Plugged it all into the computer and away I went.
I hanen't done much with it though, my apprentice from work has more experience with it than me.
The moives he's made are very good, and he saves them on a CD.
I'll find out the details when I get home if you like.
Ed :)

It's a Sony DCR-PC5E PAL. Not sure about the price, but about a year ago it was around $3,000 mark, but he managed to get it for just under $2,500. It takes both a tape and a Memory Stick.
Here's a pic of it mounted on my mates rear parcel shelf.
