Double Demerit Points (DDP) are hailed by Staysafe and our governments as the saving grace of holiday periods when the road toll becomes a politically sensitive topic. Problem is as we know that these DDPs only concentrate on speeding and seatbelts with the vast majority of Policing concentrated on Kodak-Copping.

Without bias the best source of data is the ATSB which conveniently posts road toll date for each holiday period. In this case the data represents the road toll across the actual DDP period coinciding with Xmas-New Year.

Make your own conclusions.

Note; DDP was introduced at the Easter Holiday period 1997.

Queensland trialed Double Demerit Points last year and decided against them.
W.A. also trialed them this year for 6 months. And as the trial didn't give them the results they wanted, its to continue !!!!!
It's about time we got some pollies that like cars and stop using us as cash cows.

Interesting graph. For me double points are the only thing that really do slow me down. Unless you do something dumb the fines aren't that much, so losing my licence is a much bigger threat.

I found when they first came out they had an effect on me & people I knows speed (or weather we'd drive at all)but now they seem to roll them out so often that we have got over it & continue same as always.

they turn them out on long weekends here in WA, and they do slow me down. except in the fiesta, in which case it isnt possible to go much slower :-)

Whether or not they slow you down isn't the issue - this issue is that MOST people claim to slow down in the holiday periods, yet fatalities stay relatively constant or increase when compared to previous periods without DD.

Wow, it would almost seem that speed isn't always a factor.

Aye, slow me down too, although as far as I'm concerned, its the same as 40 zones - I spend more time looking at the speedo, freakin out I might go over, than looking at the road.
