Saw a news clip last night on the ABC News which lasted a few seconds stating that the Double Demerits scheme is being extended to approximately two weeks around Easter. It's no longer enough to target people and drive them off the road for very minor offences on actual holidays. No, now they want to make it even longer again.
Unfortunately the RTA website neglects to provide a link detailing this move so consider yourselves warned. The government and RTA as usual, having been given an inch, are taking a mile.
On the other hand, the Easter driver fatigue program will hopefully be a positive. They need to make such moves to stop people falling asleep on roads designed for 200km/h where the speed limit is 110.

Well so far Tassie has restrained themselves from the Double Demerit system. I think it sucks, does nothing to curb the road toll. But hey, they are politicians, what would they know. Dont they realise that better river education will do more than double demerits?
Anyway, I hope thats one thing the Tasmanian Govt dosnt import.

Its getting beyond a joke. Next it will be an offence to drive. They are sucking the hard working aussie dry because they couldnt be bothered to fix shit roads.
No the best way to fix to roads is to lower the speed limits 10Kmph every 5 years, then extend the double demerit points more and more each break.. Then increase all the tolls on the roads.. Then ban all drivers... Then the roads will be perfect.
Its entirely possible to lose your licence for minor offences, not just for a weeks, but for months or possibly years.. And in this age of no public transport (with fewer and fewer bus routes, new infrastructure, fewer trains, more expensive taxis etc) it leaves very little options avalible.
What completely sucks is if your driving to work or at work and you get busted, your not on holidays, its just another day, yet because of some peoples religious holiday they wack you with twice the fine.
what a load of crap. i dont entirely disagree with the double demerits over long weekends, but in WA there are no increased fines. however, the blokes over here have seen a way around that little number.
double demerits have been extended from easter to anzac day weekend. so two weeks of double demerits. and if you lose your licence, you can buy it back by paying to go on a 'safety course'.
big pile of shit.

Double or nothing- get caught speeding then double; don't speed then nothing!
I think it is a big revenue raising event. Are the number of fatalities reduced? I don't think so. Does the Northern Territory have the most number of accidents even though they have open speed limits in certain areas? I don't think so.
Just my 2 cents worth!
