Despite the Firestone disaster, it seems the new truck is selling very well in the US.
The most interesting part of the article is the mention of the V8 versions, 4.6l SOHC from the Mustang, and the 5.4l DOHC which we'll get in the Falcon (I assume it's the 3V version.)

Not wanting to detract any from the great review but I assume the Patrol is in the same segment, so it is interesting to note that one or two or all (not sure) now come with 185kws from a six cylinder motor.
The 4.6 in the explorer is just behind that mark!
I think they have an ad on the box now with the old model being pulled backwards.
I realise there is a weight consideration but it does put this power issue into perspective for me.
It really boils down to how you use your 4WD doesn't it? If your a genuine off-roader, then the power factor is never the primary concern, as opposed to rev-heads like us.
If the 4WD marketers start a horsepower comparo of their own, then you would assume Ford would use the 5.4l version as the face of their campaign vs the Patrol. Perhaps Ford could 'borrow' from the Mazda ads, and have one a long the lines of...
'What happens when a true off-road 4WD is raised by a family of muscle cars??'

yeah but someone who buys an explorer is less likely to be going too far off raod. Personally I dont think the Explorer has what it takes to do the real tuff stuff, its kinda in the american SUV mould.
Dont get me wrong they look good, like I said the other day, I saw one in the car park and they look sweet, but do they really have what it takes.
Does Ford have a real 'tuff' 4x4?
