In Today's Drive section in the Age, they announce their 10 Best Cars for 2002.
Best Light Car - Mazda 2
Best Small Car - Holden Astra
Best Medium Car - Mazda 6
Best Large Car - Ford Falcon
Best Compact 4WD - Ford Escape / Mazda Tribute
Best Prestige Car - Mercedes C Class
Best Large 4WD - Mistubishi Pajero
Best Luxury Car - Mercedes E Class
Best Performance Car - Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo
If Money is No Object - Porsche 911
Pretty good set of results for Ford, especially when you have a look through the whole list. 5 of the 10 cars come under Ford's corporate umbrella!!
For those of you wanting to know about how the Commodore faired, they don't actually include other placings, instead just making a few comments on the VY, Magna and Camry.
Summary comments:
Falcon: "you won't get a better large family car for the money. Anywhere."
Commodore: "the updated VY Commodore showing few signs of improvement once you get past the sharper styling and revamped interior. Yes the steering is better, but the uncouth V6 and rough-as-guts auto gearbox are from the past and, as such, way off the pace set by the impressive new Falcon"
Not all bad though!! When mentioning the Magna and Camry they do say that:
"neither holds a candle to the locals when it comes to space, pace or outright driving entertainment."
A lot more in the article so grab a copy and have a read if interested.
