When I encode DVD movies to Divx format first you have to rip the files off the DVD to your hdd with a program like flask DVD, then re-encode it as a divx modified .AVI using a seperate program, in my experiences, the audio track of a DVD is undfortunately not seperate to the video track meaning that yes, you would have to go DVD > AVI > wav and I am not sure how you would have to do that last process...
