How hard is it to change over a 4cyl engine in pre efi car? Would a group of 3-4 guys with a toolkit, a workshop manual and 2-3 slabs of beer be able to pull it off in a weekend? Is so any advice would be appreciated

You should be right with 3 guys and beer.
We did a mates torana from a 253 to a 308 in one weekend including ripping off the 253's yella terra heads and cam and cleaning everything spotless and putting it all back on the 308 before dropping it in.
Most of us were hacks.
His clutch lasted 45 minutes longer than the conversion.

If you are talking swaping the same motor for the same motor, as in one out the next one back in, then yes it is very possible, should not be a problem.

I intend to take out my I6, swap a gearbox on, drop it back in, and change a diff in a weekend, it will be hard work, but no reason not to get done in a day, if you do your planning before hand.

if ya havent done an engine before grab a manual and some tools a slab or 2 and hit it would take probly a day in one of those less ya like us and stop and just drink the piss

we changed the engine in an EB wagon in one weekend, mind you we had fairly decent tools, including an engine hoist...but you should be able to knock it off easy.
