Hey all. I got a nastely letter in the mail, last week from the EPA.
Someone dobbed mr car into the EPA for excessice noise. "Not Happy Jan" not at all. Now my car doesn't have the character it once did have. Just letting you all know that if your car is loud, it isn't safe with people like that around to spoil all your fun.
So when is the next dyno day?? I've gotta get her on it to see how much power i've lost if any with this different muffler & resonator setup.
BTW I found the link regarding how they measure noise. I remember someone asking for it a while ago. Just scroll down and its there!
Bugger, that cant be good. Ahh well, I guess there is an advantage to living in a small town filled with bogans, no eco nazis to crap on about noise pollution. Just out of curiosity what'd you do to an AU six to make it break 90 (or is it 95?) dB?
Extractors
Hi Flow Cat
3" System Mandural Bend
Flow Master Muffler
I think it was over 120db.
Had a Nokia 5100 and that had a db reader on it. It could be accurate not too sure. but it was well over the phones mark of 115db.
Now she as got
Luke Muffler
Redback resonator
all 3" still but under the 90db mark.
damn thats loud, that would have been cool! Although its probably worth noting that 120dB is aproaching the threshold of pain and according to last years physics textbook is equivalent to standing 6 metres from a jet engine at high thrust! so maybe the phone was a little out, but still would have been cool.
yep i know that
I've had the exhaust system on it for 3.5 years and nothning.
even been breath tested a few times and haven't been pull up about it.
driven past the cops making some noise and nothing. oh well. they cant touch me now.
I had an XE that I put a new exhaust on a few years back - I just asked them for a sports system at Midas mufflers. They put one on, I liked the sound but found out by mail 2 years down the track that a copper who had heard my car from the footpath and probably without any noise measuring device deemed my exhaust too loud. Had to get it tested, it turned out to be running at 98dB when a car that old should be no higher than 96dB. They test it at 3/4 the engine speed where peak power occurs. So a stock XE 250 crossflow got measured at 2775 RPM. They also set the testing microphone at about 30 degrees and a foot or so away from the exhaust when testing. Got a hotdog shape resonator installed and it dropped to 93 - but it no longer sounded as good - took away the lovely bark it had.
Next time I buy a non-standard exhaust, I will get it written in the warranty/receipt that it has to be street legal so I have recourse if I cop any crap again.

how much would an exhaust place charge to test your exhaust noise level? gotta change my rego over to ACT one day, and not sure if mine will pass, its a twin 2 1/2 inch system with extractors and 2 lukey mufflers... never had a problem in NSW, but yeah, if its no hassle to get a test done i will get it tested first and modify if needed just for the inspection, as it sounds real nice how it is.
