Euro 2004 - Soccer

Euro 2004 kicks off tonight in Portugal!

As my family is from Holland, I'm very keen to follow the progress of the Dutch soccer team, been a supporter since I was very young! I know alot of peoples families here probably trace back to Europe and alot of soccer fans, so if you're not aware, it starts tonight!

Host nation Portugal are playing Greece, and Spain are taking on Russia in todays games.

The official site is www.euro2004.com.

The list of teams that qualified are:
Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

France won Euro 2000, as well as the World Cup in 1998, so you can never rule them out. Both themselves and Holland go into the tournament as favorites, but recent performances have been less than flattering, with France barely making the latest World Cup and Holland failing to qualify in the face of tough European competition.

I am hoping SBS play matches on TV for those without cable!

And no anti soccer posts please, if you don't like soccer, you shouldn't have opened the thread.

Anyone showing their support for their teams? Who do we think is going to win it this year?

Tim!

Also, on that official site, you can download a great file to keep track of how teams are going through-out the tournament. It automatically updates Group Standings when you enter the game results and who ends up progressing thru the finals. Great work to whoever made it, you can find it here:

Re: Euro 2004 - Soccer

another FOOTBALL fan :-)

i am irish and ireland didnt make it, but lived a in england for 12 years, so i would like to see them do well. i think the english lack a decent keeper and a decent forward line, but have one of the best midfields. will be interesting to see how it pans out. however, i think the man of the tournament will be Thierry Henry. as an Arsenal fan, i have seen him play a lot this year, and along with Vierra and Pires, i think the France are going to be extremely hard to beat. i believe the dutch defence is a bit suspect. what happened to Jap Stam?

looking forward to it...hopefully some upsets.

He's in the team, along with a whole bunch of other familiar names.

At least Edwin van de Saar is cleared to play for us - his efforts helped us make the semi finals in the last World Cup we played in.

England has been given a warning by UEFA - if their fans cause riots again, they will be disqualified from the competition! Harsh!

Since I'm an Arsenal fan as well, I'll be rooting for France as well.... they've probably got half the Arsenal squad in there anyway! Henry, Wiltord, Pires, and Vierra!

Hope they do better than they did at the world cup!

Re: Euro 2004 - Soccer

sorry to burst all the english and french supporters bubbles, but i rekon its going to be a group win by croatia and the second spot to switzerland. lol i wish.
I rekon if croatia beat switzerland on monday, then bring on england we have some real good talent in the squad including two ex melbourne croatia(knights) players josip sumunic and josip didulica. we dont have any big names, but we have a good team that mesh well, hopefully we can repeat euro 96 or even better world cup 98.

My bet france, big names but no show ponies and they are by far the best team in the world.
