finding a late 80s - 90s sierra cosworth in australia?

looking for a new car and wouldnt mind checking out some cosworth sierras. but i cant find out much info on them.

were many bought over to australia? what sort of price do they fetch over here and what should i look out for?

also cant find much info on modding them, like how much boost can they run and what sort of power can they make with the usual exhaust, pod, cooler boost etc? how well the gearboxes cope with the extra power?

any help appreciated :D
Thanks Karlos

To be Honest, good luck.
You could try the search engines.
For mods etc try the UK sites.

There were a few brought in by the private importers including a few Sapphires which was basically the sedan version. There are usually one or two in Deals on Wheels. They originally sold here around the $60k mark so I expect they will still be fairly high.

Cheers

Re: finding a late 80s - 90s sierra cosworth in australia?

welcome to the forums...i have a 1985 sierra XR4. you dont say where you are based. i know there are a few in perth. there was a saphire for sale a few weeks ago for $20k. as Russ pointed out, these were the sedans, but they were also a lot more subtle than the hatch.

i am not 100% sure what the rate for a hatch is, but i think about the 20 - 25k mark should be about right.

if you are in perth, let me know and i will find out what is going here. there is a mechanic here who does all the sierras and escorts around, and he has a notice board that people advertise on. i will be going to the mechanic on monday so could have a look for you.

Get in contact with the Australian RSOC

PS. I know of a certain Texaco Sierra RS500 that is For Sale (It would mean a trip to Germany though)

Re: finding a late 80s - 90s sierra cosworth in australia?

The late 80's early 90's will be Sapphire Cosworth's. I used to own one and it is one of the best cars I've owned. The earlier models 88/89 were rear wheel drive (the model I had) and are extremely slippery in the wet. Up to,I'm not sure when the last model was made maybe 92, were all 4x4 and the last of them (Evolution2) had the green rocker cover and I feel were the most sorted out of the line up.The green engine model was even available with air con. There are quite a number of them around here in NZ and though it is getting more difficult to find really good examples now I would expect it would be quite easy to get one here and for alot less than they are paying in the UK. Problems with the early models such as mine were gearbox/clutch issues as they used a T5. This was more vibration and noise and struggling to engage gear rather than crapping themselves but I think these are normal T5 prob's. Also turbo vibration on earlier models. As the turbo is quite large and sits up high on the manifold they encountered some vibration. Cosworth developed a damper system using a spring arrangement which helped alot but you had to constantly tension all the manifold bolts. On the later models the damper was more refined and worked better. This vibration on mine caused issues and in the end the head had to be removed to drill out the broken studs for the manifold. Head Gasket can cause some problems with higher boost but I wouldn't say this is a major problem. Mine ran 15psi boost without any issues at all and this is quite common.I'm told with good fuel 20 to 25 is quite possible .If I had a choice and money wasn't the deciding issue ,I would buy the last model made with full Recaro leather and air con. I kick myself because a number of years ago I test drove one exactly like this with 40,000 miles and nearly purchased it but the trade in difference from the older Cossie was too much. These cars are getting to be very collectible .
