Hey lads i wasnt sure where to post this... im only 17 and dont have much $ i just took up a diesel fitting apprenticeship, what car would be a good first car that wont cost a fortune.... i only earn $250 a week... maybe looking at max $5000
My advice would be get something for basic transport that is cheap to run & save your dough for when you're a bit older. 4 cyl, low running & insurance costs. Condition & service history of the car is most important, as has been said many times buy the best car you can. Don't be tempted by a "better" car in poor condition. Rwd, carby would be cheapest!

I'll second that. You could pick up a Ford Escort for very little money, and that way you have a cheap car to run, as well as it being cheap to get parts for. Even when totally stock, they still handle extremely well, and with the 2L 'Pinto' engine and hardly any weight, they go much better then most people would expect - a few modifications and you'd be scaring Falcons and Commodores! And, with an Escort, you'd also have something with a proud history behind it - can we all say 'dominant rally car of the 70's'?

My first car i got when i was 17, it was a 1976 Holden Statesman DeVille with a 350 V8, THM400, Edelbrock manifold, Holley carby, and i ran it on dual-fuel, fuel running costs were very cheap, it was the fact that the car kept falling to bits all the time that made it expensive, but maybe you can find a more reliable old Holden? But i strongly say, spend a bit more now, you'll spend a lot less in the future!
laser is always good and cheap to run and get parts for...wreckers are full of them. we got a GB meteor for $150 at the wreckers and spent something like $300 to get it RWC...cheapest car ive seen on the road.
Yeah brumby's are good work cars, they get a lot of rust over time though. For $5000 Max you could be lucky and score an EF. Or even a fairly good condition Laser it's really up to what you want it for. Most first cars are usually VL's or EB's but not everyone has to run with the crowd.
