I am after participants for two research projects if anyone is interested. I will post seperate messages for each of the projects as they are not related. The other is in the Asylum section as it is not car related.
First. I finally have ethics clearance from my university to do my research work into modified-car culture for my PhD. If anyone is interested in being a participant let me know email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
I have cut and pasted some of the info from the information sheet. Do not ring the number (I am not in at the research centre today), just send me a mail or PM.
I would like to invite you to participate in research being conducted by Glen Fuller, a postgraduate researcher of the Centre for Cultural Research at the University of Western Sydney.
The main interest of the research is in the experiences of enthusiasts participating in modified-car culture, and to investigate how conflicting and/or similar understandings of the car exist between different individuals.
The research involves asking people to participate in in-depth interviews.
„O The interview will involve question about types of car(s) owned, the nature of modification(s), types of driving practice, experiences with police and other authorities (strictly in the context of modified cars), and friends or relatives who modify cars.
„O The interview will take a minimum of two hours.
„O The interview will be taped so it can be analysed in more detail.
The study is confidential - your name will not be used. You will be given a code name/number as identification. If you agree to be participate, you will be asked to sign a consent form - this will be kept separate from the interview material, and any identifying things you say in the interview will be changed on the transcripts.
Participants must be over 18 years of age and have a suitable background (i.e. have owned and/or modified cars). Participants must live or primarily socialise in Sydney or the greater Sydney area (i.e. western Syndey). Male and female participants are welcome.
The researcher can be contacted on 02 9685 9600 or via email email@example.com
if you have any questions
Additional information (so as to answer some obvious questions):
I am not linked to the police or any other authority besides the University. Your name and any details relayed during an interview will not be passed onto the police or any other authority, except if you tell me a story about how you ran over or killed/hurt someone and got away with it (or similar!). I do not want to know about these sorts of events. The information relayed will be used as part of my PhD thesis.
I have a strong history in the modified-car scene in Perth and would find my research relatively straight forward if it were to be conducted there, as I have plenty of friends who would be keen. I have owned and modified a CA18DET powered Nissan Silvia and a 351 powered XD Falcon, and many other cars, so I am familiar with both of the main subgroups of the culture. I used to write for Street Machine magazine when I was in Perth as a freelance writer. http://members.dodo.net.au/~glenfuller/
This research is possibly the ONLY time someone familiar and sympathetic to the culture will be conducting scholarly research in to the culture.
If you do want to take part make contact with me (see above) and we can organise a time and place to meet up that would be suitable for both parties. I will bring an information sheet and a consent form.
Many thanks for your help with this project.
NOTE: This study has been approved by the University of Western Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee.
