In-flight entertainment on the new A380 aircraft...

Quote:
AIRBUS AND THALES have let loose information about the in-flight entertainment (IFE) system to equip the A380 mega-monster 550 seat aircraft scheduled to take fight in August 2005.
Quote:
each A380 will have an average of about 6 terabytes of networked computer storage onboard capable of holding up to 1200 movies in MPEG-22 format a far cry from today's half dozen looping video channels. Every seat on board will have a copper gigabit Ethernet connection and be able to pull up video-on-demand.
Quote:
Let's stop for a minute and review: PowerPC chips in 550 seats. Up to 6 TB of networked storage. GigE to each processor.
Sounds good to me, but knowing my luck, all the movies would be ones I either don't want to see, or ones I've seen lots of times already. I hope they're going to offer some sort of gaming option too!

WOW! That is a lot of storage. They could probably store a backlog of older moveis as well with that much space.
You know wat the ultimate owuld be? If you could play multiplayer games against other people on the flight! Bet they wouldnt allow Counterstrike though

Re: In-flight entertainment on the new A380 aircraft...

You can already play games against other passengers on the current fourth generation airliners (A330/A340/B777).

It would be good to get the Wi-Fi going and hopefully not the 260 wireless video streams, as there's quite a bit of avionics on all Airbus aircraft (seeing the computer has the final say on how the things are flown - which I disagree strongly with). Still a bit of work to be done with the broadband datalink, though, as Connexion by Boeing belittles the capabilities proposed so far.

Quite sophisticated this i-5000 is too. Let's hope Airbus get this system going smoothly. It took ages for Airbus to sort out it's fly-by-wire flight control system software alone.

The best form of IFE I've found is reading books on air disasters when flying aboard a Boeing aircraft. I don't really care much for how many programs I can watch, except the one with the map that tells me what the aircraft is doing, and where it is.

That does it I'm going overseas again just to see how much the in flight entertainment has improved. When I went to England (a few years or more back) there was a blank screen, you got two movies, I'd seen both. The music was the same five songs on loop for 28 hours!!
The rest of the time you read, attempted to sleep upright or looked out the window at water.... lots and lots of water.

Re: In-flight entertainment on the new A380 aircraft...

All these things cost mega dollars and that's why you only get them on premium airlines. A friend of mine, in the same trade as me working on QANTAS airliners, spends most of their maintenance time keeping entertainment systems running properly, and thats why your budget airlines such as Virgin Blue can afford lower prices - combined with paying for meals, the fact they do not have to spend any time or money on in flight entertainment is a major factor in being able to afford budget prices. But they are my first thoughts, as it's my trade!

The system sounds good for the user end, Scare-Bus (tm) still advancing airlines along well. Can't wait to see the A380 in action.

Haha, I wonder how many in flight punch-ups there would be over LAN rivalries - "Get back here you, little freak!"
