I think Ford OZ should look after fords lowcost mid/large sizer rwd platform. Its so critical to sales here, theres 40+ years of continous development here, and the current product is top class (atleast in comparison to anything else ford US or EU have done with RWD sedans).
Ford Australia should build the platform, design everything, then working with US engineers here, make a US varient with various changes, to be built in the USA. We have ours and they have theirs but we all work together to improve both. If Australian platforms have proved anything, you can build some completely diffrent cars off the same basic parts (ie BA verse AU, VT verse VZ, LWB, utes etc etc)
Even if the US only made a Falcon SWB varient, it would be worth it, the extra volume would make it highly profitable and improve development.
Ford Oz and US could then also supply a trickle to EU customers to fill in the lineup if needed, thus allowing EU cars like the Mondeo/Focus etc to be better designed for filling the mainstream purchases.
Then everything would be where it should be, Falcon assured, we get even better falcon, US gets a brillant RWD low cost car, europe would get something to really complete the lineup and Ford would compete like it never has in other markets like the middle east.. Everyone wins, better product, lower cost, greater synergy, more trust between OZ and US, more talent sharing between the countries, jobs, etc..
Ford US should get off its arse and get into the Falcon.
I wonder what a US falcon would differ from the AU one.. Size? engines? gearboxes? interior? handling..
I would imagine the check list for a conversion would be like this..
-Enlarge the cup holders by 50% with drill
-Remove all side support from all seating and replace with something lying on the factory floor, packing plastic is ideal
-Add three super size cup holders for the front.
-remove rear quarter, boot, light clusters, rear bumper, attach bonnet, front guards, bumper and head lights for taurus look
-Remove engine, replace with several house bricks.
-Remove shocks, leave springs
-Remove sway bars
-Unscrew or remove half of all interior screws and affixing devices
-Randomly replace metric bolts with imperial
-Stain interior some ungod ugly brown
-Remove connection for front indicators, attach to low beam head lights
-Attach low beam headlights connector to front indicators
-Attach brake light connector to rear indicator
-Attach rear indicator connector to brake light
-Sit down and watch tv for half a hour and then come back and break something
-Insert torque wrench into crevas of rear seat
-Insert squeak unit into squeak unit dash compartment, if Australian squeak unit is fitted replace with US spec squeak unit
-Unbolt steering wheel, attach steering wheel to rear view mirror control and then fit rear view mirror controls to Left passenger seat.
-Unbolt peddle box from RHS, cut whole in LHS floor/firewall, bolt up peddle box, ensuring your using the spunge grommets to remove any feeling of brake activation. If there is a clutch peddle, remove it now
-Drill two holes into centre muffler, these are speed holes, do not attempt to do this carefully.
-Randomly add Bling chrome to the outside and inside of the vechical
-Weld two huge RSJ extrustions to the underside of the car so american customer belives its a ladder chassis.
-Remove bonnet and replace with one of 352 bonnet variations
-Remove bumper and replace with 45mph bumper with built in tyrewall
-Affix some old american automotive name, like, Like Grand Crown Marquis Victoria, or Shelby Cobra.
-Remove wheels and replace with 14" steel wheels with exploding firestone snow tyres
US conversion is now complete.
