A 2 week old BMW x5 was on it's way to a resturant in Lilydale one night and was doing 70km/h down one of the major interstections. Also coming through the same intersection was a ford falcon marked police car, on it's way to a domestic call no lights or sirens. The two collided head on, with the police car running a red.
The owner of the BMW X5 on asking why the car was written off was told,
To replace each airbag is $5000.00 the total cost of airbag replacement was well over $25,000.
this topped the repair bill, and the car was replaced.
Officers are being quizzed on thier speed to the domestic call, and the lack of use of "lights and sirens"
interesting huh??

Then the insurance company repairs the car cheap and sells it off at an auction. My mate wrote off his mums barina. Insurance took it, repaired it and sold it.
wow $5k airbags...that seems a little excessive!!!
for the price of 3 airbags you could get yourself a new fiesta! hehehe

Yeah, emergency vehicles when responding must use all sirens and beacons available, otherwise, the officer in charge, or the driver, is responsible for any impacts/damage that may occur. This is based on a precedent set down in canberra when a police car had a collision at an intersection when it was responding to a job with beacons only, and no siren. It was deemed that the response driver was not using all safety devices available, nor did he give clear indication, that it was his intention to run the red lights.

Do they need sirens when going through a bussy intersection on a green? Caus the other day i saw an ambo barrel through an intersection with only his lights on... but he was going through a green light as i said.
