Thumbs up Ford Hits back over TV ads

I found this today at drive .com
Onya Ford

Ford Australia today rejected the federal government's assertion that one of its advertisements glorified speed.

The government was meeting with carmakers today to look at ways to change advertising codes amid concerns TV ads promoted speed.

Parliamentary secretary to the transport minister, Ron Boswell, cited a Ford ad where a car is overtaken by another car across a salt plain as an example of ads glorifying speed.

But Ford argues the ad was not a real situation and did not involve cars performing flamboyant manoeuvres on a road.

Viewers were intelligent enough to realise it was an unreal situation, Ford communications general manager Louise Teesdale told ABC radio.

Ms Teesdale said Ford would join other car industry representatives at the meeting in Canberra with the government today to discuss concerns.

Some of the claims being made against the ads were drawing a fairly long bow, she said.

"I think we need to look at the whole scenario," Ms Teesdale said.

"I mean I'm a big fan of driver training and things like that. I think young people learning to drive need better instruction and I think we need to look at providing that.

"But I think trying to draw a connection between advertisements that are clearly not based on reality and driving habits is a bit of a long stretch.

" ... I mean you look at the number of films around with car chases and video games and everything else," she said.

"I think we're being made a bit of a whipping boy on this."

I am glad they are finally standing up and making a stand. If they ban those ads then there are many other ads that can be deemed to be promoting unsafe behaviour.

Gee, doesn't everyone drive along a salt plain with a jet car next to them?

I would've thought that thrashing one's car on a salt plain or race track (a-la the XR8 ad with "wobbly-mouth") is safer than hooning through suburbia. I must have gotten it wrong...

Did I miss something in the translation??? What is the intention and the realism in a Monaro racing in the same league as Porsche, Ferrari etc and actually winning.

This is just comical. Don't we have laws on truth in advertising? Surely the Holden ads are misleading and also banking on the apparent speed factor more so than Ford?

We could argue that the ute drag ad is only displaying torque and drivability of the new V8, not flat out speed. Otherwise we'd do one with a T Series and the speedo off the clock.

At least the new Ford ads are in the bowl not the road and the Holden slalom ad is proving driver ability not all out speed.

If _my_ jetcar was overtaken by an XR8 Ute, I'd want a new jetcar! One that _doesn't_ get overtaken by a ute limited to 180 km/h!
