Population is aging, more of the population is going to get older. No way in hell would they make changes to piss off all those voters..
By 2021 there will be more middle aged people than young people. So for me, pensions and free public health will be abolished before I ever really get to use them and by the time I get to 65, the retirement age will be lifted to around 80!
There are 4.1 million baby boomers in australia. That is people 40-58 y/o. We will see nearly 1/4 of the australian population slip into retirement over the next few years. Meanwhile, the 20's age group will basically stagnate numerically, from 2.83 million in 1999 to 2.93 million in 2021.
Now this 65+ group are have grown up with automotive transport being a primary form of transport. They are going to wish to continue driving beyond the point they can't walk anymore. Nearly 50% of this age group will end up living alone!
By 2050 the largest age group in australia by ~50% will be the 80+ one!!!
Age pensions will cost us 5% of GDP (up from 1.5% now) and health will cost us 15%(up from 8.5% now).
To pay for this estimates are that the GST would have to be raised to 30%!!
No way you say? The government would doubt or tripple taxes just because of my age!! Think again!
"And when the spending floodgates were lifted ahead of this years elections, the governments consciousness of the growing electoral clout of the grey vote was again apparent in the $600 cash bonus for pensioners, and in the decision to allow senior citizens to earn up to $32,612 before being required to pay income tax (compared with, say, $13,000 for a single-income family with a child under five)."

People aren't kidding when they talk about a major crisis due to the aged population.
I think we will see alot more of these types of incidents. Lot more people are going to be killed and injured for life like those poor kids at that preschool, government stands by and does nothing to stop it..
After all too busy installing speed cameras.. Affecting those in the weaker age group of 16-45 generally.
