Hey guys, gonna buy my girlfriend a push bike for her birthday, but i've got no idea on what to look for.

What brands are good?

Also for a girl 5'5" what size wheels should I get 22, 24, 26"???

As you can see i don't know what i'm talking about.

Ive got a Trek 2500 road bike, 56 cm, nice ride i would definatly recomend Trek, and have bikes from arround $1500, however Trek 2300 and up are not cheap starting at arround at arround $4000.

But for your GF's height 26" rims with a smallish frame is the way to go (assuming your looking at a road bike).

Giant, Avanti, Gary Fisher - the last ones are pretty expensive but they're all good..

And it depends on what you want to get her? Solid frame? Hardtail (front shocks)? or full suspension (frame and front shocks)

For around $600 you can get a good bike with a light frame - aluminium is good.. Titanium alloy and carbon fibre are very expensive and probably not worth it unless she is really keen on bikes.. However the weight difference between steel and aluminium is fairly substantial...

All gears, etc are generally all shimano gear and a 21spd with quick shift gears is pretty std on $600 odd bikes..

Unless she is a really hard core downhiller then for $600-700 you can get a decent aluminium frame hardtail with std shimano gear (all good), and a decent front shock - rock shox or something similar.. brakes aren't a huge factor, well adjusted brakes work good in any form..

Most bikes have 26" rims and its only the frame size that changes.. i have a 22" (i think - it may be a 24) frame and i'm 6ft - i prefer a smaller frame cos it gives more clearance around certain vital parts..

Or you could get her a $300 repco special with cheaper components.. and unless you know exactly what you are doing its easier to get a pro to do the first service cos the cables will stretch to the point of the gears not working..

It doesn't have to be anything special, she's not an expert. I just want something that's of fairly good quality.. Is mongoose any good?

What other kinds of brands?

This page lists bulk loads of shops in all states and those that have online shopping - which you can check out and then visit the real shop.. Just compare bikes on the component quality and front fork quality - they're really the main points of differentiation on bikes in this price range..
