The Goods & Bads of a 300zx

Hey,

Im currently thinking of buying a early 90's 300zx. Just wondering if you guys could give me some information on what goes wrong with them and NO im not going to turn it into a ricer with some stupid loud exhaust and stickers all over it!

I currently have an EB XR8, which i still plan to keep!

Re: The Goods & Bads of a 300zx

They are a reasonably reliable thing provided the previous owner didn't wring the ring off it. The turbo models have heat issues in the engine bay as twin turbo + **** all cooling = dramas. As with any import, check it's history and look for accident repairs. Also check the wear on the steering wheel and pedals - telltale signs of an odometer change if the km's seem a bit low...

From what I have seen, it's the gearbox and clutch that tend to be the first problem with these models. Brakes may need replacing as well depending on km and condition.

They are a real steal at the moment, and you will be able to pick up a great bargain on one if you get in quick before the new 15 year rule changes come into play.

Happy hunting!

Re: The Goods & Bads of a 300zx

too expensive to maintain. a guy from work wanted one and his mechanic told him to stay well away from them. they may look good but have a few issues with heat and space. A simple timing belt change is a disaster.

Re: The Goods & Bads of a 300zx

Yeah really hard to maintain those cars. I had a mate that had one had to get it serviced a fair bit, dunno maybe he just got a dodgy one but otherwise its a nice car, goes allright. Look under the car usually there maybe drift damage if the previous owner was into that....

Re: The Goods & Bads of a 300zx

as everyone has said they are too expensive to maintain. any part (no matter how small) will be in the hundreds of dollars. that said, if you've got the cash and thats what you want, go for it. You only live once.

Re: The Goods & Bads of a 300zx

My best mate has one, it has 515hp at the treads, he really has problems with little parts that go in it all the time, switches and relays, all parts are expensive but he has pretty much sorted it out now, it came to that age, he is actually selling it, I think for around late 20's, he did a full interior retrim and it has a great stereo.
