i'm interested in hearing some thoughts and experiences in purchasing an ex-fleet car at an autogroup.com.au auction. All i know is that you can inspect the cars, but can't test drive them, and there are no warranties. I am a bit nervous about the idea of paying money for something i haven't even driven.

Dont worry about it, most of the govt. fleet cars are current model with 40-50k on the clock, and are still under balance of new car warranty. So if there is something wrong, take it to a dealer to fix.

You can pick up some good bargains at the govt auctions.

There's some cheap cars at the auctions. Very good buys to be had. For eg 2000 AU2 Forte's around $16 or $17k (last year). I've bought a few cars from the auctions (Pickles/Fowles), but nothing that new though. Most newer cars (from the fleets) are usually in good nick, and a hell of a lot cheaper than buying from a car dealer. As Road Warrior pointed out, if there's an issue with the car (low k's) the warranty usually covers it.
