They did change it to tone down the image and reputation of the vehicles being very powerfull.
That got me thinking about what all of the others ment. A quick google found alot of information on VIN Numbers and their history but nothing on the abreviations.

GT = Grand Touring
GT-HO = Grand Touring Handling Option
GT-A = Grand Touring Automatic
GT-P = Grand Touring Premium
GS = Grand Sport
L = Luxury
GL = Grand Luxury (strange for a base model though)
XR (2, 3, 4, 6, 7 & 8) = Experimental Racing
