GT, GTHO, GL, S, what do they all stand for? - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

I was wondering what all the abbreviations stand for on cars (Ford's in particular). I remember that GT or GTHO stood for one thing before the great media frenzie that stopped the Phase IV's ever hitting the production lines in the mid 70's, but I can't remember exactly what. They did change it to tone down the image and reputation of the vehicles being very powerfull.

That got me thinking about what all of the others ment. A quick google found alot of information on VIN Numbers and their history but nothing on the abreviations.

GT = Grand Touring
GTHO = Grand Touring Handling Option

Some people will say HO is High Output, that's for Mustangs, NOT Aussie GT's

GS = Grand Sport
L = Luxury
GL = Grand Luxury (strange for a base model though)
S= Sport
XR (2, 3, 4, 6, 7 & 8) = Experimental Racing

I have heard HO = High Octane

Phase IV's.... That whole saga was a great shame... Although they weren't a total loss I suppose. We can still appreciate them, just not drive them.

How good would it be to have them on the road?
