(radrider) australia day is like australias birthday party.
it celebrates the day that captain cook landed in australia and claimed it for the poms, and recognises all the things that make this the best country in the world,
i guess kind of like your independance day.
it should be to celebrate our becoming an independant republic

Reason: mistake in my history lesson
it celebrates us becoming an independent country instead of being controlled by the poms
It is to Celebrate the Discovery of Australia. It has nothing to do with being independent. If we were and independent country we would be a republic. Maybe some people should go and read some Australian history.
oh ok, i wasnt sure what it was...we have Columbus day here, which i guess is like the same thing. Columbus came over from Spain, and found America. so we get off from school and some people get off from work...

Some Australians are indifferent to the celebrations and treat the day as just another holiday. For a minority of Australians the celebrations arouse dislike; some comment on how the arrival of the British to Australia affected the indigenous people of the country and some term Australia Day "Invasion Day," regarding it as celebrating Indigenous Australians subjugation. In recent years, some Indigenous Australians have also celebrated the day as "Survival Day," thankful that their ancestors were not completely wiped out by the newly arrived settlers.
According to the Government website...
Quote:
Australia Day, January 26, is the biggest day of celebration in the country and is observed as a public holiday in all states and territories. On Australia Day we come together as a nation celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.
So, with that limited education I have about the holiday......
.....for those that celebrate the holiday "Happy Australia Day" and I hope you had a great time!
....for those that abhore the holiday, we'll get those bastards yet!!
It is to Celebrate the Discovery of Australia. It has nothing to do with being independent. If we were and independent country we would be a republic. Maybe some people should go and read some Australian history.
you are right, my mistake.... must have been too early in the morning that my excuse anyway and i`m sticking to it...
