i just read in todays courier mail that the owner of harrys diner has said that unless you have a reservation to eat there, then you wont be let into the carpark.

so theyve finally shut it down. thanks old dude in t bucket :(.

THE owner of Harry's Diner on Brisbane's northside – where hundreds of car buffs gather every Friday night to revel in the smell of burnt rubber – has one message for anyone

thinking about hanging out there this week.

"If you don't have a reservation to eat, then you won't be allowed to enter the car park," Kerrie Schull said.

The decision to restrict carpark access was made after a teenage girl was hit by a hot-rod last week while standing on the footpath outside the diner on Newmarket Rd.

While many of the car enthusiasts who gather at the car park are law-abiding citizens, some choose to do burnouts and take part in hoonish behaviour.

Mrs Schull said most of those who fooled around were younger people who generally chose not to eat at the diner.

Neighbouring businesses fear that if someone is injured inside the car park they could face a public liability lawsuit.

Mrs Schull said she sympathised with other business operators that shared the Windsor Business Centre car park, and did not want to see anyone else injured.

"I think it might throw a bomb on the business financially (to only allow people with reservations to enter the car park), but what other option do we have?" Mrs Schull said. "We can't afford to hire a security guard."

Ron Chapman, who heads the Windsor Business Centre's body corporate, said it was a tricky situation that could easily be fixed if police had the power to move people on from loitering in the car park.

Police only have the power to move people on from areas such as schools, war memorials, ATMs and inside shopping centres.

The laws do not allow police to move people on from privately owned public spaces, such as shopping centre car parks.

Mr Chapman said he would present Police Minister Judy Spence with a submission calling for the law to be changed.

Not sure if this is a good or bad thing .People will probally drive past now and gather up at another place and do the same thing, but what can be done?

Directly opposite the harrys car park is another car park with a similar entry / exit layout. The hoards may simply congregate there or over near subway. How is this to be policed if there are no current laws that enforce it? Are they erecting a boom gate?

Yeah, it's a shame for Harry's.

But it won't stop the gathering per se. People will always find somewhere else to hang out and accidents like this will continue to happen (note I didn't say frequently or anything) until something happens to stop the minority spoiling it for those who are, shall we say, more passive in their appreciation of cars.

if everyone from harrys came to aspley maccas itd be nowhere near as ricey. just all the 6s and 8s goto harrys. id welcome the move to aspley maccas, its about 30 secs from my house :D.

looks like a repeat of a few years ago everone gathered at aspley then months later back to harrys , but got to admit Harrys is a top venue to meet up, shame shame shame lol

THe bottom line is that Harry's will no doubt go out of business now.. Wether we ate there or not we'd get the odd coke or milkshake...

Shame because Richlands Drive-In is closed now Harrys'... no-where for the rodders and old schoolers to hang out now
