i have finally been let go by my employer. 14 years of service, avoided 4 major restructures and several minor ones, and they have finally caught up with me.
i got a phone call this morning to let me know that my application for retrenchment had been fast-tracked (the only thing they have managed to do right) and as of wither monday or wednesday i will be out of work.
it is the strangest feeling. on one hand, i have never been out of work before. and to face an indefinite period of unemployment is a bit scary. on the other, i have finally broken the link with the bank (no names ) and have the whole world to search through for work. a brand new beginning.
i am prepared to do anything until i get back into project work...heck, i am going to try my local ford dealer to see if they need any finance guys.

Having changed jobs voluntarily after 8 years without much of a break, my advice to you is do absolutely nothing for 4 weeks minumum. Play golf, travel, whatever, but just enjoy 4 weeks of not having to be anywhere. You will find the effect on the mind and the body is astounding. When you finally get to the stage where you dont actually know what time it is, and dont need to wear a watch (about the 3 week mark) then, and only then is it time to consider going back to work.
Enjoy every moment of it!

Sorry to hear about that rsgerry. Wish you all the best in finding another job. It seems the company I work for is tightening its belts to keep profit. They have let go of a few contractors. Stupid market better pick up. Anyway goodluck dude!!!

Stick with it Gerry. Have been through the same thing myself, so this is exactly what I did...
I hit the job market hard, put all the shyte of the last job behind me, and most of all - I didn't dwell on it and let it get me down. All that that did was to bring my confidence down, and it affected me in my first couple of job interviews. I realised that if I couldn't let the bad times go, "they" would have won, and that's what kicked me into action. Once I'd changed my attitude to looking forward, things became a lot easier, and not long after that, I landed my current position.
Best of luck mate. Show "them" the level of their stupidity in the best way possible - by thriving at a new company.

Clicky clicky here for previous ride! I still miss her!
well, mrs rsgerry has a 'few jobs' that need doing (i dont like the sound of that one bit) and it gives me some time to work on the escort (if it ever comes home...nearly 8 months in the paint shop now ) .
i have been told that the skills i have gained from the bank are very highly regarded, so hopefully i could land a job sooner rather than later.
thanks for all your kind words.
