No I'm not after a Midnight Oil's album. (For all the Oil's fans).

Sorry couldn't help myself, I am after info from those forum members/readers with IL6's that have had work done on the cylinder head. I am looking at options, Port/Polish, bigger valve springs etc.. I already run a 113 degree big grind cam so this side of things is taken care off. I am looking at getting both the outlets and headers ported together. I have an ED 4.00.

Looking for info/advice here folks.... Bring it on...

I read an article in an aussie rod mag recently from a number of auto machining shops. The general message was make sure ports are matched (inlet and exhaust) and dont bother polishing. They said that the best port finish was "as cast" for performance.
I think the HP ports (inlet) on the tickford heads are smaller than the standard head inlet ports. Probably to get the air speed up. Not sure about the exhaust ports.

Whats the idle quality like with the big cam and how has improved the overall performance?

The idlle is surprisingly good, except of course when the car is cold. It dosen't like to reverse when cold it surges.

The engine is stronger from Mid range through top end with top end exceeding all expectations. From around 3,500rpm the power really hits and continues until redline at 5,500rpm. The bottom end did suffer a bit with a noticable drop in power particularly off the line and under load. However I have now overcome that with a change in diff ratios from 3.08 to 3.45.
My ED is an Automatic so I may also need to look at putting in a 2,500rpm Torque Convertor. (Maybe).

The cam is from Chiptorque. It comes as a HP4 package which includes Cam & Chip.....

So when you do manage further mods Nipper, how much can you reprogram the chip? Of the chips available, it seems the Unichip is the most readily modifiable chip where post-chip mods are concerned, so I was curious how the Chiptorque version rates?

Hey Venom S, hows that Premium Sound going?.

Yeah the chip can be programmed from a plug in lap top which can be connected to the ECU. Or the other alternative is to have all the info passed on to Lachlan at ChipTorque and he will customise the chip to the mods. For a cost of course.

I understand he has just developed a new chip for the AUII XR8 it will be available soon..

There is / or was a guy out Granville way that "specialised" in Ford only hot-up stuff. Apparently the Ford chips can "learn" & as such will reprogram themselves to overide aftermarket chips (this is the reason ford chips are more expensive then other manufacturers - the price you pay for a smarter computer)Will have to chase up the name of the place if people are interested

Wulos, that is correct. However is mainly for EECV onwards.

EB - ED are still the best to chip due to the EEC not continually reprogramming itself..

I was playing with it last night actually. Has couple of features in the premium sound that were interesting...

The stereo has compression - which I'm sure is probably now a common feature on a lot of good quality head units, though my Pioneer Cd/tuner head I got for the old EA didn't have this. Ford actually had a reasonably informative passage as to why you might use it (quoting usable decibel ranges, etc). It was set off, and I kept it that way.

It was has a power limiter to reduce volume when it dectects distortion, and this was set on - so I turned it off and had a play. Don't think I would really worry about this setting either way,
since I doubt I'm ever going to crank it loud enough to distort for any long periods of time - I don't want my tinnitus getting worse!
