How about the supercar scare of 1972? Killed the V8 Charger, Phase 4 Falcon and XU2 Torana that were going to debut at Bathurst for the big race.
From memory, it was started by Harvey Green, a Journalist....

Id say that Holden using U.S sourced LS1 V8s was a pretty big step in local V8 history.
Same with Ford developing the new BOSS, there arent many DOHC V8s getting around in the world.

Pollution legislation strangling performance, the phasing out of lead in fuels, sorry i cant think of much else.
