Do you think it would of sold any better or worse? It popped inot my head while at work today. Could anything had been done differently (other than a re-design)?
Personally, for some stupid reason the "culture" of Australians (and most people I guess) is to go with the winner. The underdog thing is BS. Surely V8Supercars doesn't weigh that much on the minds on your typcial Aussie family. I think it would had done better if Holden made it, mainly because of superior marketing (ford has picked up its game), and secondly because alot of Holden buyers go for the badge no matter what.
BTW, I love the AU, and dont turn it into a holden bashing thread please... :)

well i reckon that the aussie culture is BACKING the underdog, but anyway. I honestly don't know. Was there a Holden model that sold as poorly as the AU. if so, well then perhaps they wouldnt have sold any better. IMO, it sold poorly because it was a poorly designed car ( i love it, but not too many others did). So even if Holden made it, well then maybe it still would hve sold poorly.
ive often thought about this. what if the falcons were badged commodore and commodores badged falcon? would it make much difference to what our opinion is of these cars? i think it would. infact if the (whole new) commodore (that is using a totally different shell which will be released in years to come) rolled out of the factory with ford badges would we ford lovers like it and rant how good it is? same if ford released the next new shelled car as a holden would it then mean that its a heap of shit? do we actually like the cars themselves or are we just subconciously following what badge we believe is the best.

i reacon if holden would have released the au it would have sold better than it did. my reasoning to this is that when people think ford they see it as an american product. change thae badge to the holden badge and poeple think its purely aussie. Most of them dont even know that is a GM company, and assume holden is the only tryly australian company.
I own an AU, love it as well, as everyone knows.
Now, if Holden had put the exact same car into the market at the exact same time I honestly think it would have sold better Not great, but better. Simply because Ford Marketing is complete crap and, after a year, they had basically given up on the car and were more focused on the BA internally. I dont think Holden would have layed down quite as quickly.
The problem with the AU 1 was with the bread and butter models the Forte and Futura looked terrible with the plankton chomping grille and ugly wheel covers.
An AU Fairmont ghia lowered with the right wheels looks very nice.
Having worked on the car clinincs for the AU, i can tell u not many Ford owners liked its looks, but Ford made it anyway.
