How do I get my late 99 XR looking like a 2000

I have a stockish AU 1999 Liq Silver XR6 with the rims that come with the S Series, no kit to speak off.

Basically what are the visual differences between the 99 XR and the 2000 and how much will it cost me to make my car look that good.

To me the visual difference is that the 2000+ XR6 has 17" Tickfords standard, 3 stripe grill and the bottom of the front is slightly different also.

It also needs dumping big time. The back sits up so much!

Argh

Your advice and price estimates would be appreciated

Hi and welcome to the forums.
Apart from the wheels (which you've noticed) the other major (exterior) differences are:

1. Different front and rear skirts which are substantially squarer in look.

2. Different rear wing.

3. Lower by 12mm.

Hope this helps.

I KNEW IT!

I thought my car was way too high.

Well thats the first thing I am getting fixed. Does anyone have a recommendation on someone in Melbourne to do the modication?

Should I get it lowered by 12mm or more?

BTW thank you very much for your advice...

Oh one other thing... Do you have any idea if I am able to get the AU2 skirts or what other options are available to me?

How much would they cost do you think?

Thanks

Lower it and change the rims by all means, but why change the front? I personally prefer the AU1 XR front to the AU2 front. It's more simple and smooth (if you know what I mean). I think that the AU2 XR front end can look a little fussy; the inner lamp is also hooded, the three bar has been described as a venetian blind, etc. I do like the squarer rear end of the AU2 and i also like the lower section of the AU2/3 XR front end, it just seems a little to fussy to me in other respects, especially compared to the more pure form displayed by the AU1 XR front end. Save your dosh and blow it on mechanical mods, save for the rims and lowering which will really improve the all-round look and stance of your XR.

ok thanks alot for the tips..

I found a guy selling his AU2 17" for 900 so I am going to call him tommorow.

Also any recommendations on how far I should lower the car? I am new to the car mod business as you might have guessed thus why I am asking so many questions, however logic tells me that I should put the 17" on before I lower anything hehehe.

Lowering a car has practical downsides (eg scraping, ride comfort), as well as potential insurance dramas with some companies, so bear this in mind when you choose how low to go. On the other hand, most people think "the lower the better" as far as looks go - so only you can decide where to draw the line.

How about air suspension? Seems popular with street machiners.

Why would you want to change your XR6 into an RS2000.....Thats a retrograde move isn't it? It would involve replacing the engine with a 2 litre and chopping something of the back and off the front............They make good rally cars mind you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehehehehehehehehehehehehe

Digging up an old thread here. How did you go AU.Boy? Im in the same situation as you now. Had the AU1 XR for a couple of months and want to look at changing it. I think i've decided to leave to front end alone. I certainly need 17" wheels and maybe a AU1 bodykit and lowered. I figure theres no point in turning your AU1 into a AU2 look alike. Be proud of what it is.

Did you end up getting the wheels or change the front end?
