It costs $4 million just to change the speed limits to 40? WTF? What a joke. I bet I could do it for no more than $300! Just change the friggen signs!

Pedestrians are among our most vulnerable road users and lowering speed limits is a proven way to improve safety and reduce crashes.

FACT: Since lowering the speed limit to 50km/h, the amount of pedestrian-related accidents has risen. So what's 40km/h going to do? MAKE THINGS WORST?

An appalling 58 pedestrians were killed last year and the time has come to stop the carnage

It's about time? No one should die whilst walking! It was always time!

The jokes that the government is telling us are appaling!

40km/h in shopping centre strips is not that bad, I have had a 40 zone near my house for as long as i can remember. Hell, if travelling at 40 for a distance of maybe 200m saves a few lives and injuries, its worth it....How many seconds is that speed going to add to your travel time? 5, 6? who cares.

And its only timed based, so its not you'll be doing 40 all the time.

I dont see the problem?

No big deal really. Same thing applies to school zones in Qld when I lived there.
I just find it strange that VicRoads have taken this long to get to it.
Besides, anyone doing 70 or 80 through a busy shopping area is takeing a bit of a risk. So many times I've had idiot pedestrians step out in front of me! I usually slow down for these areas anyhow so I dont end up with a human sized hood ornament!

Well if they are putting in around Centre Rd it needs it the amount of idiot drivers, school kiddies , buses, etc. etc. etc.

I don't know how many times I have nearly had my front taken off by somebody not looking when reversing out from a parking spot on clayton road....

I used to live in QLD and the School Zones were a great idea when everybody does the 40kph speed limit.

it's part of their arrive alive campaign.. for pedestrians, sure, but i fail to see how going from 50kmh to 40kmh will change whether the passengers die or not. especially since at 50kays theres more chance of dieing of boredom than anything else.

All of the points are valid, I don't say no, but where does the figure of $4 million come from? To me it seems a bit rediculous. Anyone know what is exactly being done with this money?

they just say that so they can justify the millions of $$$$$$$$$'s they've taken from us in speed fines.
