Victoria will no doubt crow about the fact that their road fatalities for the last 12 months have dropped something like 16%. Of course they'll say that it was because of their revenue cameras and blah blah.

But have a look at the ATSB site www.atsb.gov.au and look at the August bulletin for road safety stats http://www.atsb.gov.au/road/stats/current.cfm where if you look into the details you'll see an example of what statisticians call statistical variation. On page 6 the last 5 years for Victoria show that the road fatalities are only now achieving levels similar to five years ago after a period where the stats rose 25% or so.

See. pollies and road safety 'experts' like to compare figures that make good quotes for people like scumbag Carl Scully (NSW) and Steve Bracks' cronie. The truth is another matter.

I see no noticable decline here at all. General average has been 400 a year... even before the revenue cameras appeared. If anything it's going up, not down.

heh . . . how farback has anyone gone in these stats ? I seem to remember going back and finding that we are currently at the same fatality level now, as we were in like 1949 ( and thats with like 1/10 the number of cars on the road back then too ). In the years in between 49 and about 1995, it had been much much much higher. Since around 1995 or so, the fatalities have pretty much plateaued out.

Yes, no deaths would be nice, but we ain't going to realistically get there ( short of everyone walking )... ( I know, I'm a horrible person for accepting these tragic deaths, yada-yada-yada ).

Look for "MOTOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT FATALITIES PER 100,000 POPULATION" - interestingly the graph has been dropping since 1973 ( as far back as it goes - when did we get speed cameras again ?

And then you get the famous 'every 19 km/h can increase you braking distance by up to 10m'......and then when you research it you find out it was done with a little povo shitbox with bald tyres on a wet road - an extra 10km/h doesn't make my Falcon stop any more than an extra 3 metres at city speeds!

Hey AP...dont know if you saw the post i made a couple of weeks ago about speed cameras in the west and the front page article about their placement. basically, there were stretches of roads that havent had a fatality in a few years, yet get cameras about 2/3 of the year, and others that have had 2 or more fatalities in the last 12 months that rarely get a camera.

two ways of looking at those numbers..the roads where cameras are used are fatality free because of the cameras, or they are placed there because they are decent roads with lots of spots to hide a camera.

It is obvious which one it is. In other states it is more transparent. In Qld they stuck 'em on the best stretches of motorway as soon as it was built. In Victoria they stuck 'em on some bridge with no crashes.
