eek I blew something up at work today!

So I need to set up 3 crappy servers for our branch offices and I'm hunting around for some old Dell GXa desktops. I grab 6 and begin assembling them to the specs that I need. The first 2 get done without incident.

Then I connect the next one to see what's in it. I connect the power, keyboard, mouse and monitor but don't turn it on yet. I then go to lift the case so I can see inside. As I push the 2 buttons on the side of the case to release it I hear a loud BZZZ and smoke billows out the back of the power supply. I quickly yanked the power cord out before anything else happened.

Now for the funny bit. All of my 3 colleagues (+ a Dell technician working on a lappy) are in the room. No one heard the BZZZ so I am chuckling away to myself as the smell slowly makes it way around the room. My supervisor looks over at me first and I lose it completely then. Then the other guys look over and everyone cracks up (even the Dell dude!). I think we've all blown something up at some stage.

No pics as the machine looks fine externally. I hope the memory i still OK as I'll probably need it.

I think I'll postpone further assembly until after lunch...

Still, it's not as bad as when I electrocuted myself whilst modding my Xbox.

Re: I blew something up at work today!

Nah, a little smoke is nothing to fear. It's the bang that causes dak stains. hehehe

It reminds me of a time when my supervisor received a machine from our HQ in the USA and he forgot to switch the power supply from 115 volts to 250 volts before plugging it in... Unfortunately I wasn't there for that event though.

Re: I blew something up at work today!

At work once one of the women in another department called our IT bloke & said there was smoke coming out of her computer what should she do?
It didn't cross her mind that turning it off could be a good start.
