I moved into my new home in August of last year and inquired wiht Telstra to have Broadband installed.

At that point in time they informed me that the current exchange was not equipped to supply the service.

I called back a second time about three months latter to see if it was available and was told the same thing again. They took my details and said once this service was up (early 2003)and running that they would phone me.

So i decided to call againd this afternoon. After inquiring again the lady put me on hold to check if ther had been any progress.

Once she returned promtly said that my particular address will *never* be able to have access to Broadband internet services and that i will only be able to have dial up service.

I was amazed what i was hearing. I said"i am only 16km from the city" she replied "it makes no difference where you are located in relation to the city".

Someone please tell me this is NOT TRUE!! I moved in 10klms closer to the city expecting to able to access this service.

I can't survive on dial up. It is costing me a fortune in dial up calls.

Last month there were 90 dial up calls alone.

I'm in the process of tracking down the local Telstra area manager, but it appears that they have a pretty effective smokescreen policy in place..

I wouldn't bother with Telstra, it's as useful as tits on a tomcat.

I have trouble connecting every 3rd day. The cable modem HATES the hot weather, anything over 35 degrees and I've got big issues connecting.

Telstra of course have no idea on anything at all and we're stuck with them for another 2 years til the contract runs out.

ADSL must be with in 7-10Km in wire lenth from the exchanged to work properly.

I am 1Km from the exchange but the wire length is 3Km.

That's what the tech told me while he was installing mine.


Funny part is you are 16Km from a City and can't connect while out here in central west NSW a villiage of 100 is able to connect.

Haven't heard any complaints from the people I know who have it. It's meant to be faster that telstra on paper, but telstra comes and goes speed wise. One day I can have it out doing optus, the next it's slowed right down. It seems to be more consistant.

Only thing with optus is once you hit the 3 gig limit for the month it drops the speed down to 28kb, whereas telstra will keep going, costing you 18 cents a mb.

Its the same here except we are used to it.
My old man works for Telstra and the Exchange here has been upgraded for ADSL, but Telstra isn't offering it here and its still on standby. My dads exact words were "They won't do it until enough people complain about not having it", which doesn't sound to far away from the truth. This why Australias Broadband is such a Joke.

I live in the Far north of WA, so we are used to having to wait for stuff and been 10 years behind the rest of the country.

Luckily for me I work for a IT company up here that provides Broadband via Wireless over the town.

Well on that note i shall be typing a none threatning letter and firing it off once a week to telstra area managers and hope this helps in some way. ( i must be f#*king dreaming)
