in the past 2 weeks ive done pretty much the same thing but except i killed my mates 5speed non-turbo vl (on drop back) which ive been in and beaten 5litre VS clubsports and other commodores; i started 2 car lengths back turning a corner and in 300m i was half a car length in front, i couldnt stop beaping and rubbing it in, i also kept up with a vl turbo auto on drop back as well, we were dead even all the way down the road :)... he turned down the next main road after that.... my mates r31 coupe only beat me by half a car length from standstill. i was so happy!!! but ive been beaten a hundred times though, i got to start the mods to my car.

The way I see it it was a V8 but I was desperately tring to see if it was the 3.0. It sounded like an 8 and it had the characteristics of a V8 when the speeds rose (ie it held fast, didn't drop off). It was an automatic too.
From bmw.com.au:
"The powerful 210 kW / 440 Nm, 4.4 litre V8 engine is mated to an intelligent five-speed Steptronic transmission..."
"...The 4.4i effortlessly reaches 100 km/h from standstill in just 8.2 seconds and has a top speed of 206 km/h."
We all know my car can hit the tonne in 7.7sec roughly so that explains the air between us. It was definately not the 3.0i...
"This eager, athletic engine develops 170 kW of power at 5900 rpm and a muscular 300 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm." ;and
"The powerful engine is able to sprint the X5 3.0i to 100 km/h in just 8.9 seconds (9.2 seconds with automatic transmission). "

Had some fun with a V8 commo yesterday on the way to uni.. first time, he wasn't really paying attention, so I had the lead from the lights, up to about 60 - my car was in 1st going nuts (but fuel restrictor was choking the engine by that time :( ), then his big V8 pulled ahead..
Second set of lights, I somehow got up front with him again, he spun the wheels a tiny bit at the lights, ended up passing me at about 50km/h this time.
Both times though, I let go pretty quick once I reached 80, he just hurled himself along at some insane (and illegal) speed..
Fun time, if I had a crow cam / DEV3 kit, and no restriction on the fuel (which starts killing torque at only 3500RPM), I'd probably have thrashed him
