I just did my tax and it works out I have to pay $1800 to the governement!! What the ****!! I am a full time uni student, how they hell do i owe them that! I am seriously broke!
Yeah i bet they gave you austudy or youth allowence and did not tell you that you had to pay tax on it. Then when tax comes around hou have to pay a certian percent of what you earnt over the last finantial year because you did not elect to get tax taken out
I've just been to see a professional and they recon that I can ditch about $500 of that, and then claim some more stuff that will reduce it heaps. The annoying thing is I have to pay HECS because I earnt over the maximum ammount of $24K for the year. So that makes me pay at least $950!
Bastards! I want my life to be normal! Why do I have to be penalised for working hard?!?!
You can claim hardship and avoid paying the HECS amount if you really need the money. I dont think it would take to much of a letter to avoid it. If you word it correctly with the advice of your accountant it should be fine.
One of the most frustrating things with youth allowance is that if you earn over the threshold and dont work at all you dont pay tax on it but if you work for say a week then you pay tax on the whole amount its complete rubbish.
Although if you earnt over 24k as a uni student then you cant be doing to badly. Some full time people dont earn over that.

Youth allowance is a bloody joke, that thing need reforms badly. I know someone who had a job, quit, not because of study commitments, but still manages to get 190 bucks a fortnight from centrelink for doing SFA.
