mad Well the hits just keep on coming don't they

Coming back from a nice family dinner at Birdwood tonight my Gearbox blew in 5th gear at 110kmh.

It was really weird how it happened as well, just cruising sticking to the speed limit all of a sudden i smelt oil and it started grinding, i pulled it outta 5th gear and then the motor seized.

Pretty interesting experiance losing power assitance to the steering through a sweeper at 110, not too mention trying to actually stop the car.

I am that close to turning my back on cars forever the way i feel atm,
Had a total of 21 days driving in the car since the conversion and now it is back off the road(again)

I wouldn't care if i had been thrashing it and it blew from my own overdrivng, but to blow while cruising at 1900 rpm in 5th is a friggen joke.

Dunno where i go from here, but the way I feel I might fix it and sell the friggen thing, just had a gut full, no matter what i do to this car it just won't go for more than like 3 months before something blows and it's off the road, I mean jesus my Escort is more reliable and it is 31 years older than my Fairmont.

And I have been taking it so easy trying to look after the car and the mechanicals, my mates have even been calling Miss Daisy(as in driving Miss Daisy) since i got the V8 because I have been so cautious with everything, wtf do I have to do to actually get some luck

Jeez, that sucks. Pretty weird how sometimes things just go pear shaped for no apparent reason. Well, hope you get it fixed up without too much trouble and hey, after blowing the gearbox theres not much worse that could go wrong, Right?

Sounds as unreliable as my EF Ghia. Did 2 boxes (the 3rd one was already on its way out), had the aircon seize (had that one yet? apparently a known issue that comes in around 70,000ks and they won't fix it under warranty) and the diff go. 170k on the clock. Traded it for 9 and my accountant had it depreciated to 22k, nice little tax cheque back this year. :)

What gearbox, what diff ratio? Sounds like you fried the input shaft.

You didn't happen to use a mustang T5 did you? What bellhousing and spigot bush did you use?

My guess = no gearbox oil or very low. That'll destroy the bearings every time.

You'd be surprised how hot the cluster gets at different oil levels. The oils not just there to lubricate it. It's also there as a minor form of cooling.

It's more likely you'd find that poeple in Tassie have aircon problems. See the compressor seizes up when you never have to use it. :s6:

Re: I swear I'm the unluckiest person alive

Input shaft bearing was destroyed, and i mean destroyed literally ripped to pieces, dun know what there called i forget, but it has chewed a whole bunch of the gears and left metal shards everywhere.

We pulled it apart today, it is absolute throw away.

We did check the fluid level when we put it in, it was fine at the time, no leaks, nothing to indicate any loss of oil at all.

However when we went under today and there was oil everywhere, some seal or something has gone bust and dumped the whole load basically.

But yeah anyone know where I can get a T5 real cheap?

On the bright side, we had the gearbox, shaft, starter etc all out in 21 minutes, a new PB lol

Re: I swear I'm the unluckiest person alive

What bellhousing and spigot bush did you use? If the input is not supported by the spigot, the input shaft seal will fail very quickly. If your RPM @ speed figures are correct, you have used a mustang 302 box, which will require mods to run correctly behind an aussie engine.
