Re: If you could design and build a car from scratch...

I'd build Supercars. Not Ferrari aimed stuff. McLaren and Koenigsegg aimed stuff. Basically, I'd take a well proven engine design, Ford Windsor V8 for example (which is out of production), and begin making my own engines.

The cars would be highly customiseable for the buyer, and would require you take an advanced driving course before ownership.

Base model would consist of, say, a 5.8litre OHV 16v V8 (Windsor based copy) that produces around 336kW (450hp) @ 6500rpm and 610Nm (450ftlbs) @ 4500rpm. Rev cut-out would be 7000. The car itself would weigh around 1100kg wet (2420lbs). Available with either a six-speed manual, six-speed sequential manual, four-speed automatic or four-speed 'manualised' auto. Final drive ratio in the auto's would be 3.50:1 and 3.90:1 in the manuals. It would have 17x11 rear wheels (RWD of course) with 305/30 ZR17 tyres. Front's would be 17x9s shod with 255/35 ZR17's. Interior would consist of two race style seats with six-point harnesses, appropriate gauges, comfortable steering wheel and gear selector. The base model would also be carpeted. Power Windows, A/C etc are all options. Independent suspension all-round, 335mm brakes all-round with adjustable ABS settings. Suspension would also feature full adjustability. Expect the 336kW base model to do something like 11.35 or so for the 1/4 mile, around 3.3 to 100km/h and top out at 336km/h (210mph) in manual form in 6th gear (0.63:1 with 3.90:1 final drive) and 347km/h (217mph) in auto form in 4th gear (0.68:1 with 3.50:1 final drive). Lap time wise it should be around as fast as a Carrera GT or Enzo, but probably faster. Figuring build costs and such. It would market ar around $400,000 Australian. If sold in the US, it would sell for $150,000.

Then we have the Top Range model. It gets a 6.8litre Supercharged (Centrifugal) OHV 16v V8 (Windsor based again, 4.125" bore with a 3.850" stroke and 6.200" conrods). Power would be around 750kW (1005hp) @ 7500rpm and 1375Nm (1015ftlbs) @ 5500-6500rpm. Rev limit would be 8000rpm. Wheels would be 17x11 at the back with 315/35 ZR17 tyres. Fronts would be 17x9 with 275/40 ZR17 tyres. All the same transmissions with the same final drive's. Ceramic brakes on this model. It would be a stripper. Lots of fibreglass, comes with a factory roll-cage, carbon fibre race seats, carbon fibre dash etc. Weight would drop to 1000kg (2200lbs). Of course luxuries would be optional, but this is the 'racer.' This would be the fastest factory car ever built upon release. Expect it to do the 1/4 mile in 8.5 seconds, go from 0-100km/h in about 2.5 and top out at 398km/h (249mph) in manual form (0.63:1 6th gear, 3.90:1 final drive) and 411km/h (257mph) in auto form (0.68:1 4th gear, 3.50:1 final drive). Looking at build costs, etc. It would retail in Australia for around $1,000,000. In the USA, if sold there, around $500,000. Won't be selling many of those.

Those are the basics of the idea. Would need lots of time to think about suspension and the fine details. Nice dream eh? Later on I might even delve into the world of sports sedans...

Now where's that lottery ticket....

Re: If you could design and build a car from scratch...

I'd go something along the lines of what Chrysler have done with the PT Cruiser - take an older style design of car, beef it up and make it a new car.

Something like a 1930's Ford pickup with a Barra 220 would be nice.

All custom built to the specifications of the buyer/owner of course.

Re: If you could design and build a car from scratch...

i know its a bit off topic sort of, but i would love to see the return of a small car that is RWD to the ford range - something that the missus can drive, but i can have a bit of fun in too! FWDs just dont do it for me

Me too mate. Which is why if I could, I would make something simular to the Mk I and Mk II Escorts - and I seriously think that if Ford did that, a modern, small RWD car, they would have no problems selling it.

But it seems they think big car = RWD, small car = FWD.

Oh well, I guess you and I have no choice but to keep dreaming about a new small RWD Ford - but I can't help but wonder how many other people would be interested, not just here, but the general public too...

Re: If you could design and build a car from scratch...

small car: Think ford focus... but rwd. same engine/gearbox as a normal focus and same basic options/models.
small performance car: top model focus + 5lt mustang V8 also rwd and 6spd manual/5spd auto.

thats all i can think of atmo.
