32yo male no claims for over 10 years, clean licence for >8yrs etc.
Call GIO to get a quote on insurance for my EB2 Fairmont Ghia Wagon. The only mod I've really done is put extractors on for towing although the rest of the exhaust is standard.
Well, that's a bit of a hot rod I guess so they say they won't touch it.
It's got all new suspension bushes, steer rack, engine, shocks, brakes (including new rotors), Yokohama A539 tyres etc etc. So, if I drove a stock ex-taxi they'd insure me but with extractors no way.
Makes me laugh - which is what I did loudly down the phone!

It's insane isnt it!
I too am 32, Rating 1, never made a claim. Had to change off NRMA when I moved to Vic so I start calling around the usual suspects (except AAMI - not in a million years!).
Insure your dead stock standard XR6 sir, yes, no problems! All were similar in price, all were happy to insure it!
Insure your EF wagon, sure, no problems...umm you say aftermarket mag wheels? Well, are they standard sizs? Yes, ok, so long as you pay extra. A 7 seat conversion you say? Is it approved? Yes?...ummm, not really sure about if we can do this now? This is a modified car you realise? Let me call you back.
So a high performance XR6 VCT is no problem but the old family wagon is a huge risk because it has aftermarket wheels and an extra 2 seats (professionally installed and certified) in the back for the kids?
Previous ride: EBII V8 Manual Ghia spring roll.
Current ride: 1970 ZC 351 Fairlane Custom.. (estimated 350ftlb @ 2000rpm.. max torque 420ftlb at 4500rpm.. with standard exhaust manifold!)
My most amusing insurance experience came when I informed the the company I had an immobiliser fitted, thinking this would make it cheaper. But no, an immobiliser counts as a modification!

Mate your laughing!!! Atleast you CAN insure it. Everyone I rang for my car laughed at me and didn't even know what a XW was. Then I was told.. "sorry we don't insure vehicles over 20 years old". That was EVERYONE but NRMA
then.. NRMA didn't even bother to tell me about their vintage insurance (cheaper) so I took my business to Torque Underwriting. All the mods I wanted (legal ofcourse) and all I had to do was let them know what was done, no problems. Insured it for 3 times more value than what NRMA offered and cheap as chips.
I don't know what other insurance companies smoke especially on the issue of road handling and safety?? Isn't there somewhere that we can complain about insurance companies charging EXTRA FOR UPGRADING THE SAFETY ON OUR CARS? Doesn't seeem logical.. oh but that's right... we are talking about insurance

Delete striped BAGTs look like (*)(*)less models!!!!
you have got to be joking!!!! in WA, you cannot transfer a car without an immobiliser fitted, so the insurers have no choice, but what you have described is absolute bloody madness. incredibly short-sited.

NRMA have this stupid rule that you can only lower a car 1" from stock, but the centre of the headlights must still be at least X amount of mm from the ground when it is lowered.
me and dad measured it, when mine (EB XR6)/mums(EF)/his(AU XR6) cars still had stock ride height, none of our cars met the requirement, even when stock...WTF kind of rule is that?
so we lowered them all an inch :)

I can get new Genuine Holden/Ford/Audi/Land Rover/Honda parts cheap, PM me!
When I bought my EF XR6 (new) the cost for insurance for it was "The same as any other six cylinder Falcon" I was told, even with factory fitted 16" Wheels, Body Kit and a few other options.
A few years down the track, the cost (and category) of insuring an XR6 went up considerably, for the same car!
Go Figure.....
