S-TYPE R goes on sale

Jaguar launches fastest ever road-going saloon

The S-TYPE R will reach 60mph in 5.3 seconds
With the launch of its latest F1 car less than a day away, Jaguar has made an exciting addition to its road car range with the release of the S-TYPE R. An all-new 4.2-litre supercharged engine, which produces over 400 bhp, helps make it the fastest road-going Jaguar saloon ever.

Although the top speed is artificially capped at 155 mph, the latest S-TYPE will go from 0-60 in just 5.3 seconds. The new car features a unique six-speed automatic transmission and Jaguar�s highly acclaimed CATS (Computer Active Technology Suspension) system, which gives the car enhanced stability and comfort, particularly during cornering and braking.

"The S-TYPE R has a dual personality, in line with Jaguar�s philosophy for our ultra high performance flagship vehicles,� said Mike Cross, Jaguar�s chief engineer. �The new car is inherently quiet, refined and comfortable � but when stirred, it becomes a true performance machine, satisfying the demands of the driving enthusiast. Power is instantly available, without ever being intimidating or overly demanding of the driver."

At �47,400, it�s the most expensive model in the range, which now stretches to eight cars following the simultaneous release of the 2.5-litre V6, the new entry-level model. At a whisker under �25,000, it augments the range of 3.0 and 4.0-litre models that have sold over 135,000 units since the S-TYPE was launched in 1999.

do you guys think this model is only because they have had falling sales ? i dont actually know if their sales are falling im just thinking maybe thats why

plus all the other models have had the R variant for quite a while now so why has it taken so long for the s--type to get it?

oh well it will make an interesting read against similar mercs and beemers or whatever other car in a future motor or wheels

I think a manual would be a very worthwile adition to its specs but I guess Mercs AMG cars don't have manuals but then again M don't have autos

If it took this long for the S-type to get a 'hot' version, i wonder how long they plan to do the same for the X-type..... mmmmmm that would be tasty... :s2:

I think they were planning a supercharged model all along, should be interesting against the M5 and E55, similar power, similar torque(??) similar wieght, an extra gear.
If it makes it here it'll probably go for $160-175k....

Looking over the sales figures for just the US, it seems that the S Type has slumped in sales by a few thousand, however Jaguar still posted an all time yearly sales record boosted mainly by the new X Type.

did they give a reason for the slump? if it was only just the last couple of months i doubt they could have whipped up a type r model so quickly it must have already been planned maybe they were anticipating an eventual drop off in sales

i've always loved jags.... i've loved the S Type since i laid my eyes on it... but this... I WANT ONE!!! 5.3 sec! that's brutal! i'd pick it over E55 and M5 anyday! but not over a TS50. call me weird, but i'd rather have a TS50 than the jag.

actually, that's not true...

i'd rather have the jag. i'd fang it for a few days, sell it, buy a TS50 and supercharge it! hehe i'd use the rest of the money to pay my insurance premiums! imagine the premium for a blown T3 TS50 for a 21yo guy! SCARY!
