Jay Mays, I need some background...

I've got an assignment on a design, and I've chosen the Focus MA. I have all info on the car that I need, but I still need info on the car's designer, Jay Mays. I just need things like his background in design, major acheivement, yada yada...

So uhh, If any of your smart people can help me out, I would really appreciate it.

I'm rather curious. In every mention of his name, be it on the web, magazines, etc, he's always referred to as J Mays. Does he actually have a first name? Were his parents tripping when they named him so J is actually his name? Or is it Jay just shortened to J (in this world of downsizing)?

Re: Jay Mays, I need some background...

J = J, not Jay btw.

Here is a slightly different biography for J Mays:

Joined Ford: Oct. 1, 1997

In 1965, J Mays watched as his father departed home one sunny afternoon with a simple directive from his wife: come home with a suitable replacement for the familys tattered four-door sedan. Several hours later, much to the amazement of J and his mother, a brand new 1966 Ford Thunderbird drove down the dusty road and into the Mays driveway its new home.

While that Thunderbird was hardly the type of family transportation that Mrs. Mays had intended, it was just the sort of dream car that sparked the young Mays unyielding pursuit of things automotive. More than 35 years later, Mays is vice president, Design, Ford Motor Company, with responsibility for shaping the design direction of Ford Motor Companys portfolio of brands.

Mays joined Ford and was elected to his present position Oct. 1, 1997.

As part of his current responsibilities, Mays is leading the development of the more than 65 new Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products that will launch within the next five years. These products, such as the 2004 Ford F-150, Freestar and Mercury Monterey and the 2005 Ford Freestyle, Five Hundred, GT and Mustang, will form the basis for the companys product-led revitalization.

Since joining Ford Motor Company, Mays has completed the development of several new production models including the Ford GT and Thunderbird and the Lincoln Navigator and Aviator.

He has also led the development of significant concept vehicles including the Ford Forty-Nine, 427 and Mustang, Jaguar F-Type and Volvo Safety Car Concept. He has also played an instrumental role in the redesign of the Ford Motor Company auto show display stand.

Following graduation in 1980 from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif. Mays began his career as an exterior designer with Audi AG in Ingolstadt, Germany, where he was recognized for the design of the Audi 80.

In 1983, Mays moved to BMW AG in Munich, Germany to work on exterior design proposals for the BMW 5 and 8 series.

Mays returned to Audi in 1984 as a senior designer. He was manager of exterior design and was responsible for developing aerodynamic research vehicles for Audi Rally/Trans Am programs. He also worked to develop full-scale model proposals for the Audi 100, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Polo and Audi Cabrio. In addition, Mays designed the Audi AVUS concept car.

After spending the first part of his career in Germany, Mays came back to the U.S. in 1989 to work as the chief designer in Volkswagen of America's Design Center in Simi Valley, Calif.

He worked to establish a design center infrastructure including facilities and equipment needed for development of full-scale exterior and interior models. He was also responsible for the design and branding of the Volkswagen Concept 1, which later became the new Beetle.

In 1993, Mays returned to Audi AG in Germany as design director responsible for worldwide Audi design strategy, development and execution. Mays has received numerous professional awards and recognition for his work. Mays' design career was the subject of an exhibition called "Retrofuturism: The Car Design of J Mays" at the Geffen Contemporary of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles in November 2002. He received the Harvard Design School annual Excellence in Design Award in February 2002. In September 2002, Mays received the Don Kubly Professional Attainment Award from the Art Center College of Design. Mays was born Oct. 15, 1954 in Pauls Valley, Okla.
