I know this has been posted a few times before, but I’m just seeing what peoples opinions are lately about this topic. :)

I own a 98 Model AU XR6 Manual, with 2.5 Exhaust, Extractors, SS Induction with k&n filter.

In the next week or so I’m looking to upgrade the CAM in my car. The three main companies that come up were Jim Mock, Crow & Herrod. I’m looking around a Stage 3 CAM.

Just trying to get peoples general thoughts on which company to go for & has anyone purchased a CAM package from these companies before?

Personally I’m leaning towards Jim Mock, because there CAM requires no modifications to the Computer & they were very convincing over the phone! :)

go and see jim mate you won't regret it
his dev4 cam kicks in at around 2500rpm when you start to feel the pull and they know what they are talking about
ive got a dev 3 with dev4 cam and am very happy with the package.

Your choice is yours, but do yourself a favour, get a dyno before the mods and one directly after.

Absolutely right - and better yet, organize to get your beast dynoed at an independant shop before and after. It's not beyond some tuning shops to change dyno configurations to give the illusion of more gains than there really is.

Personally, I'd recommend Herrods.

Ok i won't mention any tuning shop or brand but in regards to getting a better cam for the AU XR6 i too am very interested in looking at a better cam profile for mine.

But from my investigations all of the cam upgrades that are available are only for the standard 4.0L engine not the HP engine. I think fitting a cam that is dedsigned for the standard engine would result in a drop of performance for the HP engine.

I have also heard that the cam grind in the HP is as best as it gets in terms of all rev range power. Until i see a cam specifically suited to the AU XR6 HP, personally i won't change cams.

A guarenteed modification to give it a better get up and go without loosing any rev range pull would be to fit a 3.73 diff. Only compromise is at cruise the car would be pulling some 300rpm higher.

I own a 00 AU XR6 (HP, not VCT.) When I asked Herrod about cams, his answer was that it wasn't really worth changing it, as the AU XR6 cams are a very good grind and fairly similar to those he had developed, and the gains would be minimal.

At the end of the day, Mock, Crow etc are in the business of selling cams, and you have cash. If you choose to spend it that way, that's up to you.

There are others on the forum who purchased Crow, Mock and Wade cams, but the majority have older XR6s and standard Falcons who gain more from such a swap.
