Russian Chevrolet

GM has signed a �237million deal with Russian firm AvtoVAZ to build the Chevrolet Niva.
Production of the SUV, which uses a Russian platform and features a 1.7-litre V8, is expected to reach 75,000 units a year for East European markets. Meanwhile, take-over talks between GM and Daewoo have ended without a deal.

Why would anyone bother building a 1.7 lt V8? Why not just leave one bank off a V8 twice that size? Or better still, just use a normal four cylinder.

Maybe it's not a joke. After all, the Russians did build the Lada Niva, which was a joke, but the Russians were serious.
