K&N Filters....the truth...

ok when I got my exhaust done I was at the shop and asked about a CAI setup. I looked around and to my suprise there was not one K&N product in sight.

Obviously I asked why and this was the response I got - "K&N are rip-offs, they owned the rights to the design, which has ended recently; so now you will see heaps of other brands that do exactly the same thing".

Has anyone else heard anything along the same lines? Im not bagging K&N here, but I have always wondered why they have held such a premium over other brands. Is their warrenty longer maybe? I dont know...so what have you fellas heard ?

I dont mind paying the extra to get the best product..but if other brands do exactly the same thing then obviously I would like to know.

Re: K&N Filters....the truth...

If you want the best then get the BMC filter, cost more than a K&N and they are also a better product.

Re: K&N Filters....the truth...

In all honesty, i really do think an air filter is an air filter, regardless of what brand it is. I have a K&N and the only reason i got it is because i can pretty much leave it in there without worrying about it, except to clean it every now and then - it makes sense cos im in a country area and i dont wanna be going through a hundred air filters while i have the car.

Yes i have K&N stickers on my car, but why not, they came with it and they look ok, so i used them.

It comes down to product testing - a lot of the cheap imported asian brands wouldnt have any r&d or testing. K&N are a huge company that spend millions on development so I would have to say they are probably decent. I have never bought one as I always buy the foam UNIFILTER rampods - Aussie company, there prices are good and the foam is washable. I also love the induction roar.

Thumbs up Re: K&N Filters....the truth...

We did some dyno work with the T3s, and I can tell you that we got 4 rwkw with a K&N over the standed paper filter, As for them being a rip off, "I don't think so" we tried a BMC filter and they were the same 4 kw increace. So what one is better? nether there the same. Although from memory I think the K&N was cheaper.......

Re: K&N Filters....the truth...

K&N have a MILLION KM or THE LIFE OF THE CAR warranty. for the initial expense it costs a bit but you work out the cost of normal filters over 10-20 years and its cheaper (K&N) since you are only buying one filter.

Re: K&N Filters....the truth...

Yeha i think K&N are about the best in the business and so far i'm happy with the product. I did you the O2Rush filter sponge (made locally by finer filter). I found it to be ok but it would get soo messy and oil would drip down the intake box.

Besides i don't think K&N are over priced, finer and uni filters charge the same if not more than K&N.

Re: K&N Filters....the truth...

I use a filter made by a company called ITG, an English mob.

They're aren't well known in Australia but supply 3 the formula 1 teams, rally etc. The filters are made out of three layers of foam. Cost about $130 for a Ford Fairlane filter. Last forever.

Don't like K&N since they tend to overcharge for what they are, and every man and his pet dog used 'em.

Re: K&N Filters....the truth...

I dyno'ed the difference for my K+N on the Focus and there was about a 3 kw increase and about 5NM difference in torque, very minor but the car needs all the help it can get! I don't think they are a ripoff at all, you just have to look at the construction of the filters to tell where your money is.

It pays for itself anyway, I don't pay for replacement air filters in my servicings, just clean the K+N and back in she goes. I paid $85 for my K+N, so I only need a few servicings before it's paid for itself, without taking the increase in performance into account.
