Thumbs down Learners banned from driving V8s and powerful cars

After a very sad and unfortunate crash that involved a head on collision between a truck and a learner driven- v8 commodore resulting in the deaths of all occupants, the State Government is deciding whether it should place restrictions on Learner drivers banning them from driving v8 and high powered vehicles.

The facts that have emerged are that the (VT it looks like) Commodore was being driven by a 17yr old girl on her Ls when it collided head first into a truck in the opposite lane killing all occupants in the car and only minor injuries to the truck driver.

Police at the scene say that "they dont think excessive speed was a factor in the collision".

What I dont understand is why does this mean that no Learners should be allowed to drive hi-po cars. From the facts so far, it seems the girl driving was inexperienced which could very well have been the reason for the crash ie. got spooked and drifted into the path of the truck.

I dont think the engine of the car contributed to the cause of the accident.
This could just as easily have happened in a Hyundai Excel or a Camry.
I learnt to drive in an V8 VS Commo and an XR6. Because they were powerful I was taught to drive responsibly and gave me valuable experience.
Anyone can get into a serious accident even in a 2hp Gogomobile.

RACV spokesman says that experience in all kinds of vehicles in all kinds of conditions is essential for when you are learning.

This is a typical knee-jerk reaction by the Bracks Government that does nothing for general road safety and gives more reasons for them to tax/fine motorists and nanny everyone in their driving.
I dont know about other people but im getting really sick of them.
Hurry up State Elections!

Re: Learners banned from driving V8s and powerful cars

Nothing was said about banning learners from driving V8's.

They actually pointed out on the radio news that it was OK for the learner to have been driving it. the guy went on to say the rule has to be that way since it may be the only car they have access to in the family.

Re: Learners banned from driving V8s and powerful cars

i dont have any concerns with learners driving V8s, V10s or even V12s if daddy can afford one as long as it is a RESPONSIBLE passenger that is next to the driver. the concerns that i do have is the people that have just got off their Ps and are still hoons and let their mates drive their V8s like dickheads doing burnouts and driving dangerously without consideration for everyone else or themselves for not knowing how to control a car when givin open slather to do as they please.

Re: Learners banned from driving V8s and powerful cars

I saw it on news and radio and heard at least three times that the Gov is considering restricting Learners from driving powerful cars. I said V8s cause they would constitue powerful cars.

Which guy was talking on the radio?

Lol, they changed their tune real quick.
I just saw on ABC a statement by Peter Bachelor saying they dont want to jump to conclusions pending an investigation.
They caught on real quick to the popularity (or lack of) of that idea!

Re: Learners banned from driving V8s and powerful cars

T_Terror, credit to the politicians here (I heard the Bachelor comment this morning). The only talk of banning learners from powerful cars I have heard is speculation and beat-up from the media.

Of course the accident near Castlemaine was a tragedy. The 17 year old driver, both her parents, her 12yo sister and a French exchange student were all killed. Apparently there is another sister, who has just lost her family - I can't imagine how devastated she must be now. Also don't forget the truck driver, he is being treated for shock.

Re: Learners banned from driving V8s and powerful cars

The people involved in this horrific crash live just around the corner from me, and like people have mentioned they were terrific people, sadly missed and yes there is an 19 yr old daughter that is living in Melbourne who has now lost her family, it was a tragedy that happended but to use the excuse L's should be banned from high powered vehicle's is just ridiculous, it still could have happened in a standard Commode, the road was wet and she was inexperianced and misjudged a bend.
