lightweight project car

Hi im looking for a new project car.
It must be as light as possible.
hopefully less than 900kg with new engine and strenghtened chassis.
It must have a water proof cabin and be lockable.
It will be recieving a light weight engine transplant.
be able to handle 300hp min.
must not be too exotic
is going to become my new daily driver

a few cars i have thought about are
Datsun 1000 650kg
Datsun 1200 700kg
escort 850-900kg
Mini 650kg
Toyota starlet 700kg
mazda r100 800kg
honda civic 1970's 700kg
suzuki swift 750-900kg
VW beetle 750kg

Rear wheel drive would be better for a engine swap. i think.

Has anyone got any other cars to add to the list? or would recomend removing a car from the list?

thanks, Con

Re: lightweight project car

MG Midget/Austin Healy Sprite - 800kgs

One of those was running as Australia's fastest four cylinder for a while, Think his name was Jeff Watson, and the sprite was running an FJ20. Good for 8sec quater mile times.

If you want the rear wheel drive, you would have to scratch the mini, starlet, civic and swift off your list.

Re: lightweight project car

Corolla ke20. One of them is the fastest roatary, un-tubbed OEM chassis, car in Australia at the moment. And another is the second fastest. Check it out at;

Not sure how much they weigh but they would have to be light for sure.

Re: lightweight project car

BMW E30
4cyl models weigh in at just over 1 tonne stock, so 900kg will be achievable.
Plenty of wrecks around now.
