Cameras to nab light runners

Drivers who enter an intersection will be fined by nee
dual function cameras to start operating this month
Police patrols may also prosecute drivers who run
amber lights after having a reasonable time to stop.
Sixty-five speed and red-light cameras will be rotated
among 85 Victorian sites in a bid to reduce crashes
at dangerous intersections.
The list includes central Melbourne intersections and
sites in Geelong, Bendigo, Echuca and Mildura.
Motorists will be fined $325 and lose 4 demerit
points for running red lights at high speed.
In 2002, 21 people died and 869 were seriously
injured at signalled intersections.
Police Minister Andre Haermeyer's spokesman,
George Svigos, said yesterday the cameras
could catch either running red lights or speeding
or both.
He said the red light camera would be triggered only
when a car entered an intersection on red.
But Mr Svigos said drivers who ran amber lights
could also be fined, but not by new cameras.
"It's against the law to go through an amber when
you have had reasonable time to stop," he said.
Mr Svigos said police would be on the look-out
for motorists illegally running amber lights.
The road toll is 243, 36 down on the same time
last year.
