Well it is a tax like any other except this is aimed towards people that supposedly can pay through the nose for it. It was changed slightly when the GST came in because the GST reduced the cost of 50 k cars more then the Government thought would be fair given the promise to look after average Joe first and formost.
BMW was one company that pleaded to allow the Luxury Tax stay as it was with the increased level of GST reduction with the arguement that their cars were safer and more enviro friendly than the cars average Joe drives now. See a problem?
The Tax is tiered. The dearer the car the more Johnny would like you to pay.
Yes I was surprised how much tax there realy is. I got $5K back on a new E/A Falcon. When I sold it to N.Z.Iff sold within six month's overseas, got tax back. That was on $24500. M.P s pak..

Funny you should bring up this issue about tax minge. I had a chat recently to a family friend at a party, he works for a Melbourne based company that deals with Diplomats. I tell ya, I wanna be one. These guys are allowed to buy everything tax free. From what I understand they are exempt from the GST, tax, luxury tax. He was telling me of a guy that wanted a new AMG CLK55, we're talking about a $200,000 here (and their insurance is cheaper), what did he pay?? $80,000.
No wonder there are all these taxes on cars, coz if there wasn't, we'dd all be driving M3's and AMG's, well I'd like to.
I'd also have a T3 in the garage for the Sunday drive aswell though

Great!!!!!!!!!!!!! So the pricks also get this as well as diplomatic immunity
the price would have to be kept below $50K because if it goes over, it would be significantly more expensive!
i mean, i agree that the more expensive the car, the more tax you should pay, but i believe this should only apply to cars over $100-150K since there's a LOT of car under $100K out there that are slugged with this luxury tax.
