My uncle until recently always had guns .They are very strictly controlled , licenced , stored and subject to police inspections .There is talk here now of banning air guns which I have myself for shooting squirrels in the back garden. Most of the thugs that pick on people are cowards and only brave when they have a gun in their hand , take the gun away from them and most would s*** themselves if you stood up to them .To easy to kill someone with a gun rather than a knife which is just as lethal but requires more personal contact .The sentencing of those caught can be a joke at times .
Exactly. One of the commanalities of the mass shootings they've found in the US (other than the perps are bat sh** crazy) is that they kill themselves once the police arrive. The Mall shooter about a month ago was trying to take out a bunch of people when another man with a license to carry pulled his gun, but couldn't get a clear shot, so he took cover behind a pillar. The nut with the gun by this time saw him and blew his own head off. We have armed guards stationed in banks and major office buildings, yet our most precious commodity (our future) are left to be defended by unarmed teachers, many of which are staunch non-violence supporters. You don't talk a nut job out of committing murder, real gun control does. Having the training and control to place a .38 slug between the nut jobs eyes by a properly trained individual.
" We have armed guards stationed in banks and major office buildings"
Just a wee comment , not taking sides for against guns in US as I dont live there and think the problem will never be solved , but we have the same banks and office buildings and manage fine without armed guards .
Yup, and guns didn't help against 9-11 in NY and 7-7 in London and guns weren't used. Because of Oklahoma, farmers now have to register fertilizer, but I can still buy fire arms without registering them.
The point is this: rather than addressing the actual problem, the government would rather take away the rights of all.
Not only fertilizer but because of the dissidents , fanatics , cowards and others who plant bombs and run away , we no longer can get one of the most popular weed killers for our gardens over here as it was taken of the market because of those reasons .Lets stop talking about those S***s and hopefully look forward to a better and more peaceful 2013 .Though some how I doubt it .
Just when we find a solution that works and saves lives / assaults , this lot who usually live in ivory towers and dont know what happens on the streets , raise their heads .
Civil liberties groups .
POLICE say their targeted searches are behind a dramatic fall in crime, but concerns have been raised that authorities are inching towards "a policy of officially endorsed harassment".
ALMOST half a million people were stopped and searched last year by Scotland’s largest police force.
For the first time, more searches were carried out by Strathclyde Police than by the Met in London, which has four times the population.
The crackdown is likely to be duplicated across Scotland when Strathclyde chief constable Stephen House takes over as head of the new national force in April.
Civil liberties groups say the threefold rise in searches amounts to harassment – but the force claim the tactic has seen crime fall dramatically.
Chief Superintendent Bob Hamilton said the policy was a major contributor to a drop of 4500 in the number of serious assaults in 2012.
And he insisted the searches were based on intelligence and targeting prolific offenders.
Hamilton said: “It is very focused – it is not random.
“It is not about blanket-bombing an area but based on individuals and violent hotspots and directed towards the people who are causing the most significant threat.”
Strathclyde launched a campaign against violence five years ago and were the only force to see a significant drop in crime in that period.
Of the 493,000 searches carried out by the force last year, 69,000 resulted in the recovery of a weapon, stolen property or drugs.
Hamilton said: “The key part for us is the reduction in violent crime, which would indicate to us that we are getting it right.”
Using a statistical formula pulled together by analysts, the force worked out the most violent streets and created a league table of offenders – resulting in a 50 per cent decrease in recorded violent crime in Glasgow city centre.
Since 2008,when House took charge, there has been a 75 per cent drop in teenage knife-carrying.
And last year, violent crime fell by 25 per cent, murders by 22 per cent and serious assaults by a third.
The major focus has been on gangs, with members picked out based on how recently they have offended, how frequently and how serious the offences were.
In Strathclyde, knife crime has been a top priority and intelligence gathering has been tailored to help.
Hamilton said: “We changed our focus to make sure informants are reporting what’s important – violence and weapon-carriers.”
Now officers are briefed every day on individuals who could potentially be carrying weapons and drugs.
Hamilton said: “Sometimes we go to their door and tell them not to carry a knife but a lot of the time, the searches are done on patrol.
“We also go to the violence hotspots and where we know the worst offenders frequent.
“We make sure they know that they can’t carry a weapon and get away with it.
“If we have intelligence that a person carries a knife, the public expect the police to stop and search them to make sure they aren’t carrying.”
But civil rights campaigner Richard Haley said: “Police may use powers of stop and search in marginal situations that are getting very close to a blanket stop and search – a policy of officially endorsed harassment.”
Drop Richard Haley in the middle of the nastiest section of London wearing an expensive suit and let him walk to the financial section unescorted, he might change his mind if he makes it.
Even Michael Moore who screams from the highest mountain about gun control has armed guards. Hypocrite.
